2 Chinese students help woman who fell off bicycle, woman demands S$40,300 compensation​

A woman who recently fell off her bicycle in China subsequently demanded around S$40,300 in compensation after two junior high students helped her up.

The incident occurred on Feb. 19, 2026, in Putian, China, Lianhe Zaobao reported, adding that the woman claimed she fell due to being startled.

Traffic police have also determined that the students were partially at fault in this incident.

Fell down
According to video footage on YouTube's "CHUCHU Channel", the woman fell after cycling past a white car.

Zaobao reported that one student's mother, Zheng, claimed the woman fell while trying to avoid the white car because she lost her balance.

Following this, Zheng's daughter and another girl passed by the scene.

Video footage shows that the girls then stepped forward to assist the woman.

One student could be seen helping the woman for a short while before the other student helped her to stand up after lifting up her fallen bicycle.

However, finance.sina.cn reported that in the subsequent determination of liability, the behaviour of Zheng's daughter was reportedly considered to have a certain impact on the development of the accident.

She was thus determined to be "secondarily responsible" and required to pay the compensation.

Zaobao reported that her parents found this outcome unacceptable, claiming their daughter had offered help out of kindness but faced accountability for her actions.

This not only put financial pressure on the family but also caused "serious psychological trauma" to their child, they said.

Court case
Following this incident, the court has accepted the woman's lawsuit for compensation, 163.com reported.

The case is scheduled to be heard in court on the morning of Feb. 26, 2026.
