The issue is primarily with converts and born again chaps and its not confined to christianity. They have committed vountarily with a certain cause and they find it necessary to justify that it the right decision. Its not only in religion but in many aspects of life such as saving the whale, veganism etc.

I'm suppose to be one as well (born into Catholic)
I believe that only a minority (churches) incite their congregations into that kind of behaviour.
They are usually (but not always) associated with the American Christian Right (the usual cheerleaders).
I also agree with Scroobal that the "born again" types are excessively zealous when it comes to this. They should channel that energy into insurance sales!

It's true, those who are born Christians usually see Christianity as just another aspect of life. Those who are new converts see Christianity as THE aspect of life.

Upon reflection, when I was studying in Australia, it's the same thing too. My Singaporean friends are generally the ones evangelizing Christianity, and the my other English, Jap, German friends are also evangelizing to me... to hit the pubs or smoke a joint. Needless to say, the latter was very much preferred (I hear shouts of "heretic!").

However, the reason why you might single out the Singaporean Christian Convert as being overzealous is because you are Singaporean too, and therefore they feel more comfortable breaching that topic with you.

Caucasians usually think we practise some esoteric Buddhist religion, knows kung-fu like Bruce Lee, and only eat with chopsticks. That to evangelize to us they need culture-transcendental balls, or risk a chop in the neck.

From what I notice, however, Singaporeans have no lives, and Christianity gives them the perfect excuse to show they got a life. Overseas Singaporean students especially, fall prey easily to the idea of joining a church. What else gives them so easily an expanded social circle, a purpose in life, and most importantly, in anthropological terms, a tribe to belong to?

Last time my uni also had evangelizing X'tian Singkee students and boy were they well organized. They were the very first people to approach me when I set foot in Uni for the first time.

Since the one who tried to convert me was rather cute, I hung around and flirted with her. This really pissed off her BF who unknown to me was also evangelizing nearby ... no X'tian charity there. Sigh, I guess the highest power males answer to is still the kukujiao.

More disturbing was this female classmate of mine who became an Xtian out of loneliness and it really pissed off her family since they were buddhists. Funny thing is I stumbled into her in SG a few years back and she was going to church with her mum. It seems the daughter ended up brainwashing her own lau bu.
