Fairoz Shariff and I had a great time chatting with Simei residents over coffee this morning. We touched on issues as diverse as population policies and productivity, to a wet market in Simei, which NCMP Leon Perera raised recently in Parliament.


We really enjoy these chats. They help us better understand local issues and national concerns, which our MPs and NCMPs can raise in Parliament. I'll be back next Sat, 27 Feb, 10am - 12noon at Hola kopitiam @ Blk 248 Simei. Hope to see you there!

Sometimes when we do our HDB house visits in the evenings, I am thrilled by the beautiful views of Singapore that we can see from the corridors. Last week's house visit at Bedok was one such night. With my mobile phone, I tried to capture the beautiful view of the sea, the skyline and a plane coming in to land by night. The result can be seen below, though my photography skills do not do justice to the beauty of the scene. Far better than the view was the company of the residents. Our team was honoured to meet the wonderful parents of one of our volunteers, who were so kind in preparing a late night loh hei and mee siam for us after the house visiting.

It was good to renew our acquaintances with many residents. We also met many residents from East Coast, Marine Parade, Sengkang, Tampines and Pasir Ris. Thank you for all the valuable feedback, well wishes and encouragement from many people we met. May you all have a blessed lunar new year ahead.

Had some very enriching conversations with Simei residents this morning. Residents shared with me their concerns about some important local and national issues, including the absence of a polyclinic and wet market in Simei, and discriminatory hiring practices.


One elderly resident lamented that whenever she was unwell, she had to leave home as early as 6am to make her way to Tampines polyclinic, and once she arrived a long queue would have already formed. She would then have to spend the rest of the morning waiting for her turn to see the doctor. There is definitely scope for expanding the capacity and accessibility of primary healthcare in Singapore.


On discriminatory hiring practices, I am of the firm belief that there is no place in our country for using language requirements, or any other criteria that are irrelevant to the specific job, as a pretext for excluding certain applicants. We need to call out such discriminatory practices and make it clear that this is unfair and unacceptable in Singapore.

With Chinese New Year celebrations just wrapped up, the annual festivities come to an end. Now is as good at time as any for us to pause for a moment, take stock, count our blessings, and think about what we can do -- be it something large or small -- for fellow Singaporeans.


It is with heartfelt thanks that we look back upon the generosity of those who came forward to give generously to the donation drive organised by the Youth Wing and The Workers' Party Volunteer Network at the start of the festive period to collect much needed items for a local home for the disabled.


Together with Sylvia Lim, WP volunteers and members including Ron Tan Jun Yen 陈俊元, He Ting Ru 何廷儒 and Terence Tan 陈励正 visited the home to deliver the donations we collected. We were extremely honoured to be taken on a tour of the beautiful grounds after meeting various staff and residents of the home.

Particular highlights were the peek into the hydroponic gardens (which often produces enough surplus to supply local supermarkets!) and listening to the stories of residents who met, fell in love, and subsequently lived happily ever after after getting married.


We hope to be able to do more of activities of this nature, particularly on home ground, so do get in touch with us with any ideas and suggestions!
