I came across this article written eloquently by Dr Chan J Y. He was commenting on an ATM slip he came across. Still about 10 days to end of the month – meaning payday and the ATM slip shows a “malnourished” bank account. Unfortunately, he did not delve deeper into the subject.

Let me continue with the subject matter. Dr Chan has cultivated a penchant for sniffing out discarded ATM slips near to ATM machines to peek at the unknown owners’ miserable bank accounts to confirm his instinctive recognition of cross sections of our struggling fellow countrymen living precariously from hand to mouth on a month to month paycheck!

I have followed Dr Chan’s blog for quite some time. I notice that he used to mention often about his secret fetish for throwaway ATM slips. He is certainly a bad influence on me. I’m also addicted to this unique hobby.

Out of 10 pieces of discarded ATM slips near to the ATM machine, nearly all have malnourished miserable bank balances. Don’t believe me? Do yourself a great favor by checking it out yourself. Take up this free hobby to learn more about our struggling heartlanders.

An intelligent person or rather a discerning investigator will know that an innocuously looking discarded ATM slip belonging to someone could reveal more truths than the tons of money and resources invested so far in a national conversation.

That begs the question – what is the ultimate purpose of a national conversion? Why spend so much time talking to citizens to find out what they really want?

My simple answer to such a big question is that we just want to lead a better life for ourselves, our aged parents and our children in this country we call home. This country belongs to all of us – not any partisan party or individuals. The Chinese saying "我门都要过好日子!"sums it all.

Whether it is now, 5 years’ time, 10 or 20 years from now, we just want to live the good life we used to enjoy in our parents’ era. From the late 1960s to the late 1980s – about 20 years in our short glorious history, which in my opinion is our golden era. That is the kind of good life we wish to have in future. Do you not agree with me?

Just like forensic science, all the clues found at the scene of crime will never lie. The perpetual truth, nothing but the whole truth found at the crime scene is hidden all over only waiting to be unraveled. That discarded ATM slip is an excellent piece of evidence to unravel the truth of a typical faceless heartlander – the pain, hopelessness, dismal prospects, agony, emptiness at every end of the month. Multiply that piece of ATM slips a hundred times, a thousand times or tens of thousands to delve further and probe deeper into the very heart of the cynisim and skepticism – the bank account which is the purse string of his livelihood and preoccupation!

ATM slips will never lie. ATM slips will tell the whole truth. The truth will not get filtered or watered down. The facts reveal from those discarded ATM slips are harsh and jarring to the ears but they are the truth crying out for divine intervention. It is the key to unlock the mysterious mindset of the massive heartlanders which I believe is the main target of this so-called national conversation.

Heed the warnings before it’s too late. Before the bitterness and disappointment synergise each other into a frenzy and implode, shattering the seemingly calmness when the undercurrents are always there waiting for the opportune moment to turn awry.

And is there not some fee charged on accounts that fall below a minimum amount?

People who discard/forget to collect their ATM slips are idiots.

Men who dump their wife and children only to be left stranded by fox spirits without money and home are big fucking idiots

The low balances of discarded ATM slips is not only a phenomenon in Singapore. Other Western developed countries also have the same phenomenon. Don't believe me? Next time when you travel to USA, Canada, OZ, UK, NZ, or EU, just look at their discarded ATM slips to see for yourself.

Also, dirty ATM machines are mostly used by the lowly peasants. So, it is expected to have low balances in their bank accounts as they have nothing to lose when they leave behind their ATM slips.

Higher net worth people who absolutely need to use dirty ATMs, touched by the peasants, during non-banking hours usually don't leave their ATM slips behind for security reason. Otherwise, they usually withdraw cash at the Priority Banking facilities.

Poor people will Q for ATM for withdrawal in ATM.
Just see how many people Q in ATM in end of the month 28th~starting of the month 3th.
Without money they will hunger to death. Every month waiting for salary to survive that month only. No reserved fro emergency.

I also noticed usually when a atm is out of $10 notes, many peasant will eject their cards without drawing min of $50 notes :D

I think people with large balances tend to keep the ATM receipts because they do not want people to know even if the numbers are blanked out.

I remember a NUS sociologist commented that many Sporeans lived a hand to mouth existence. He quickly retracted that statement when pressure was applied by the invisible hand that controls Spore;)

A pack of lies! Singapore is the richest country in the world! Look around you. Everyone owns an iPhone. Even Filipino maids. Majulah PAP! :D

Yes, that would be the case. Anyone with a high balance would surely retrieve their receipt instead of discarding it carelessly to avoid the off chance that someone behind him in the queue would start trailing him. The doc who is trying to divine meaning from these receipts is not particularly bright, IMO.

That said, I have come across a person in front of me at an ATM, not print out a receipt but had his bank balance shown on the screen. If I remember correctly, it was a very high balance, something like $700k, and he wanted me to see it and also to see my expression.

Seriously do u even need to print your ATM receipt? Nowadays with internet banking you just log in to check the bank balance maybe record it down say on your phone if you want to then that's it. Select option to print for fuck?

Another report states most sinkies will fall into financial hardship if jobless for more than 3 months........

Then start a protest to kick out the PAP. posting in the forum got what use.

Only stupid morons keep most of their money in Banks. Anyone with half a brain would have it in investments of one form or another. The moron who wrote this article doesn't know what he is talking about. He should be more worried if the average dude keeps all his money in the bank

I remembered once when I was un-employed at about 30 yrs old, I have a savings of about 40k then. I was single and this 40k can last me at least 3-4 yrs. When I went for a interview for a car salesman job, that job does not have any basic salary so the interviewer asked me to consider carefully. I told my interviewer even no salary now my savings can last abt 3-4 yrs, he look really in shock  Question here is when someone is jobless, will their spending be still same as when they are employed.
