This is true. Mao and his party were on the verge of extinction as KMT were winning the fight. Chiang Kai Sak was about to kill them all had it not for the Japs invading into China.

the Nationalist and Communist like to portray Dr Sun Yat-Sen as their god-like political figure. the Nationalist chose to staunchly ignore all of Sun's mistakes and failures after 1911 to his death that sowed the seeds of the Republic of China tragedy. Sun and the Russians set up the KMT-CCP alliance in 1923. it was an disaster. the Communist used the Kuomintang to spread it's influence throughout China. within 4 years, the Kuomintang was on the verge of being taken over from inside by the Communist. Chairman Chiang Kai Shek was left with no alternative but to break off the KMT-CCP alliance and carry out the Shanghai purge of Communist in 1927. imo Dr Sun was an exaggerated myth.

i don't know about the Korean Communist resistance efforts in Korea but Kim II-Sung spent 1930-1945 fighting for the interests of the Chinese Communist and Soviet Union in Manchuria then Russia. the Korean Communists in Manchuria all operated under the direction of the CCP/Soviet.
