This is a great song, sung by a great singer.
Sometimes, she was even a drummer:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Carpenter
("Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an American singer and drummer. She and her brother, Richard Carpenter, formed the 1970s duo The Carpenters. Although her skills as a drummer earned admiration from drumming luminaries and peers, she is best known for her vocal performances.")

Man United denied by Stoke

Joe Allen earned Stoke a point vs. Man United with a close-range finish. The goal came after a mix-up in the hosts' defence. Earlier, substitute Anthony Martial opened the scoring moments after coming on.

The knives will be out for Jose. Lucky for him there is an International break before the game against Liverpool.

Francesco Guidolin sacked on his birthday as manager of Swansea. :(

Swansea dismiss Francesco Guidolin, appoint former U.S. boss Bob Bradley

from espnfc.com

Swansea City have named former United States boss Bob Bradley as their new coach after parting company with Francesco Guidolin.

Bradley, 58, had been linked with the position last week as Guidolin came under pressure following a poor run of results, and the Italian has been dismissed after Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, which left the club 17th in the Premier League.

Swansea have now turned to Bradley, who had been in charge of French second-tier side Le Havre and becomes the first American to take charge of a club in any of Europe's top five leagues.

Bradley called the Swansea job "a unique opportunity" in a parting message on Le Havre's website.

"I also know that it is thanks to the exposure this club have given me I can now today coach in the Premier League."

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins told the club's official website: "We are delighted Bob has agreed to join us. He is highly regarded as a coach and has a wealth of experience on the international and domestic front.

"He is well aware of the club's footballing philosophy and will provide us with strong leadership qualities and a renewed belief to compete at this level. It is never easy changing managers, but we are looking at a long-term appointment and we are confident Bob can settle us down and stabilise matters on and off the pitch."

Guidolin, who turned 61 on Monday, had taken charge at the Liberty Stadium in January and guided the club to Premier League safety, finishing in 12th position.

Jenkins said: "We are obviously disappointed to part company with Francesco. We felt he deserved his opportunity after the work he did last season.

"Unfortunately we have not been able to carry performances over from last season and we felt we needed to change things as soon as possible in order to move forward in a positive way.

"We would like to thank Francesco and his staff for their services to the club and wish them well for the future.''

In July, an American consortium led by Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien bought a controlling stake in Swansea. Landon Donovan, a U.S. international during Bradley's tenure, is also a shareholder.

Bradley was in charge of the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2011, including for the 2010 World Cup, before being replaced by Jurgen Klinsmann.

He then managed the Egypt national team and enjoyed a successful spell with Stabaek, helping the Norwegian club qualify for the Europa League for the first time.

He joined Le Havre last November and just missed out on promotion to Ligue 1 in May.

Le Havre announced the appointment of Oswald Tanchot as Bradley's replacement on Monday.

Bradley said: "On the one hand, I would have liked to see the project through by taking the team up at the end of the season. On the other hand, I thank HAC [Le Havre] and president [Vincent] Volpe for allowing me the chance to coach in the world's leading league.

"It is a unique opportunity and I will not forget HAC and the president have made it possible for me to take it at this moment during the season. I also know I can now coach in the Premier League thanks to the exposure this club has offered me.

"I have total confidence in Oswald's work. It has been a pleasure working with him and I know he is up to the set task: a Ligue 1 return. I will certainly continue to be a strong supporter of HAC."

Le Havre president Volpe said he was satisfied that Tanchot, who had been Bradley's assistant, would be a strong appointment.

"I am pleased for two reasons," he said. "Firstly, because we have helped Bob to reach the Premier League and secondly because Oswald is succeeding him as coach. When Bob Bradley arrived in November of 2015, we hoped to team them up so that this promising young coach could learn from his time in contact with the former U.S. men's national team boss.

"We also convinced Oswald to stay at the club this summer because he was wanted by others. We explained to him that he was well positioned to become coach in the medium to long term. We already anticipated the current situation and the senior side will now be led by Oswald Tanchot, holder of the BEPF [FFF coaching badge]."

Le Havre are currently 11th in Ligue 2.

Villa are now looking for their fifth boss inside a year after deciding to replace the Italian, who won just one of 11 Championship games in charge.

Former Chelsea player and manager Di Matteo, 46, was appointed shortly after Chinese businessman Dr Tony Xia took over Villa on 2 June.

Spain and Italy renew rivalry; Southgate takes charge of England

New elements to an old rivalry in Turin, Italy v Spain (Thursday)

It would have been the game of the week anyway, but this meeting of international football royalty in Turin is all the richer because of the sub-plots to this particular fixture. The Spanish players are looking to avenge their Euro 2016 last-16 defeat to Italy, but even that motivation is complicated by the fact that both countries having changed managers. On that Monday in the Stade de France, Antonio Conte's rampant Italy made Spain look spent and stale, but the wonder now is whether that has turned.

Conte's replacement Giampiero Ventura hasn't yet had the same effect with the side, after two laboured performances in a 3-1 defeat to France and 3-1 win over Israel. This week Ventura praised how Julen Lopetegui had restored "adrenaline and conviction" to Spain since succeeding Vicente del Bosque. The deposed European champions did only beat Luxembourg in the first competitive game of the new regime, but it was impossible not to notice more movement to the side and a greater intensity. There was just a different verve about them.

Italy's attempts to combat that will be made more difficult by the fact Giorgio Chiellini is suspended, after getting sent off in the win over Israel. It is set up for a cracking game and one that could go a long way to deciding top spot in an otherwise forgiving group.

The circus keeps moving, England v Malta (Saturday)

It is the most routine of fixtures for England - but amidst the least routine of weeks. What should be an easy win over minnows Malta has instead become about something else entirely, as Gareth Southgate temporarily takes over the squad just a week and a half after Sam Allardyce's unceremonious dismissal.

The interim coach and his players were naturally asked about all of the events in the build-up to the game, with all of them - from Wayne Rooney to Gary Cahill to Southgate himself - trying to evade it, but the reality is that this is likely to colour and cloud the rest of the campaign. It will go down in history as the group that saw swiftly saw the end of the shortest and most controversial English managerial regime in history. It is probably just as well that England have such a forgiving first match straight after Allardyce's departure. Imagine, for example, had this been a game against group rivals Scotland?

As it is, there is still so much to look out for. They range from football issues like whether Southgate will allow Rooney the same influence Allardyce was willing to despite getting dropped at club level, and off-field issues like how much of Allardyce has been erased from the occasion. This was supposed to be his big welcome, with the FA having to cancel all sort of plans. It has instead become one big circus.

Can the French stride forward by avoiding history's missteps, France v Bulgaria (Friday)

i

It is one of the most infamous fixtures in French football history, and even if this rematch can't possibly have the same impact, it can begin to make an already awkward group much tougher for France. Back in 1993, they were beaten 2-1 at home by Bulgaria in the last minute of the last game of the qualification group, causing them to miss out on the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Now, the team of Didier Deschamps - who played in that game - have started this campaign poorly, drawing 0-0 in Belarus in what seemed to be a hangover from their Euro 2016 defeat to Portugal. They could do with Antoine Griezmann continuing his club form, and getting back to scoring for his country here. They could also benefit from finding a formation that works for them. Otherwise, Bulgaria could once more make things complicated for them. That is the last thing needed in a group that already includes the Netherlands and Sweden. The French go to Amsterdam after this match.

Acid test in Quito, Ecuador v Chile (Thursday)

A crunch game for stumbling Chile - but perhaps more so for their hosts. Ecuador have been one of the most enigmatic sides in the South American qualifiers so far, winning their first four matches (including 2-0 away at Argentina) and losing their past three. Los Amarillos currently sit in fifth spot which would bring a qualification play-off but have been trending down of late. We will be told a lot as to whether they can stay there, however, by how they do in Thursday's match at home against the reigning two-time continental champions.

Chile have also struggled a bit of late, though, having lost to Argentina and Uruguay and only managing a draw at home to Bolivia. With the talent they have at their disposal, this does feel like the kind of game where things could be set straight; where Chile get the win they need to alter the course of their campaign. They need to. A World Cup without Juan Antonio Pizzi's team is almost unimaginable at this point. Ecuador, however, need to imagine something bigger. They desperately need to make another statement if they hope to hold onto their position in a very jumbled CONMEBOL qualifying table.

The revelations against the disappointments, Austria v Wales (Thursday)

i

After a Euro 2016 campaign as memorable as Wales' run to the semi-final, it's easy to forget that Austria led by David Alaba were a talented team tipped to make a similar run -- only to calamitously finish bottom of their group. Marcel Koller's side will be looking to rectify that and fulfil their talent by at least qualifying for Russia, while Wales will be looking to build on the history made - and bright future suggested - at Euro 2016.

Those aren't the only elements heightening the stakes of this game. There is also the fact that this is probably the most congested and complicated of all the qualification groups. There is no traditional heavyweight involved but Wales, Austria, Ireland and Serbia would all see themselves as having an equal chance of qualifying, and there isn't even an outright minnow either. Georgia and Moldova are much more awkward opponents than sides like Gibraltar and San Marino. There is almost no breathing space in this group, and that could make for a breathless match. This may not be game of the week, but it could end up the best match of the week.

Another giant leap, Kosovo v Croatia (Thursday)

Having already made history by claiming their first ever competitive point in their first match away to Finland, Kosovo will look to do something even more momentous. They will play their first ever home match, taking on neighbours Croatia. Granted, that will take place in Shkoder, Albania because the stadium in the Kosovan capital of Pristina is not yet up to the required standards. The change in venue won't negate the sense of occasion though -- even if their eventual arrival home will be another huge event. Having put together such a creditable display in the 1-1 draw with Finland, too, it isn't beyond them to claim another huge result against Croatia. The visiting side are without both Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic. Kosovo, then, are not without hope. This, however, is already a side full of optimism.

Italy salvage draw against Spain as Wales settle for point in Austria

from espnfc.com

A late Daniele De Rossi penalty for Italy rescued a 1-1 draw with Spain in World Cup qualifying at Juventus Stadium on Thursday.

Spain went ahead on a rare gaffe from Gianliugi Buffon on 55 minutes. The legendary goalkeeper charged out of his goal to meet a Sergio Busquets through ball only to completely miss his kick and allow Spain forward Vitolo to roll the ball into the vacant net.

Diego Costa was lucky not to see a second yellow card after the hour mark for kicking a ball after the offsides whistle had blown. Referee Felix Brych chose to give the Chelsea striker a stern warning before allowing play to continue.

Brych did rule in Italy's favour in the 82nd minute, however, when, after deliberating with his line judge, he adjudged Sergio Ramos' tackle in the box on Eder to be a penalty, which De Rossi stepped up and converted past a sprawling David De Gea.

Spain left-back Jordi Alba and Italy midfielder Riccardo Montolivo were each forced off with injuries in the first half. They were replaced by Nacho and Giacomo Bonaventura, respectively.

In Group D, a brace from Marko Arnautovic helped Austria rally twice to earn a 2-2 draw at home against Wales.

Joe Allen gave Wales the lead after 22 minutes with a powerful, long strike on the half-volley, only for his Stoke City teammate Arnautovic to answer six minutes later as he raced onto a David Alaba ball over the top.

Wales again went ahead on the stroke of half-time when Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer saved James Chester's close-range header, but it rebounded off defender Kevin Wimmer and over the line.

But Arnautovic equalised a second time when he intercepted Allen's pass, ran toward goal and finished past Wayne Hennessey.

Seamus Coleman scored the only goal as Republic of Ireland defeated Georgia 1-0.

Coleman made a strong run to the goal-line, stayed with the ball under pressure and tapped in for the breakthrough on 56th minutes.

Ireland, who could have scored more, appear likely to be without Robert Brady for their next qualifier after the midfielder suffered a head injury in the second half.

Dusan Tadic had a goal and two assists as Serbia cruised to a 3-0 win at Moldova.

Southampton's Tadic won the ball from a defender and ran through on goal before passing across to Filip Kostic to tap in.

Branislav Ivanovic headed in a second following a well-worked set piece straight from the training ground, before Tadic capped the scoring himself just before the hour mark.

In Group I, Euro 2016 heroes Iceland scored two late goals to turn an apparent defeat into a 3-2 win over Finland.

Teemu Pukki headed the visitors in front on 21 minutes, and though Kari Arnason answered with an equalising header on 37 minutes, it took only moments for Finland to retake the lead through Robin Lod's shot from the top of the box.

But Finnbogason headed home right on 90 minutes to equalise, and Ragnar Sigurdsson, who missed a penalty earlier in the second half, bundled home the winner five minutes into stoppage time.

Mario Mandzukic recorded a hat trick in the first half to give Croatia a 6-0 win over Kosovo, who played their first-ever "home" qualifier in Albania.

Mandzukic ran onto a through ball from Andrej Kramaric to give Croatia the lead in the sixth minute, then doubled their advantage midway through the first half with a diving header.

The Juventus man then met Sime Vrsaljko's through ball to put the game to bed after just 35 minutes.

And once Mandzukic came off on the hour mark, goals from Matej Mitrovic, Ivan Perisic and Nikola Kalinic followed as Croatia won easily.

Turkey fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Ukraine.

Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Artem Kravets was fouled in the box, and three minutes later Kravets doubled Ukraine's lead following a pass from Yarmolenko.

Ozan Tufan got a goal back for Turkey with a header following a corner in first-half stoppage time, and Hakan Calhanoglu's penalty completed the comeback after Taras Stepanenko pulled down Cenk Tosu with 10 minutes to play.

Also in Italy and Spain's Group G, Israel managed a 2-1 win at Macedonia, Tomer Hemed heading in Eyal Golasa's cross on 25 minutes before Tal Ben Chaim's calm finish shortly before half-time.

Macedonia struck back after the hour mark through Ilija Nestorovski, but Israel held on to earn three points.

Albania top Group G after earning a 2-0 win at Liechtenstein, thanks to Jahmir Hyka's header from close range, a shot that goalkeeper Peter Jehle fumbled over the line.

Bekim Balaj added a second goal in the 71st minute to seal Albania's second-straight win.

Neymar, Brazil dazzle against Bolivia; Uruguay cruise; Argentina held

from espnfc.com

i

A five-star Brazil continued their impressive start under new boss Tite with a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying on Thursday.

The Neymar-led Brazilians scored four goals in the first half -- each more delightful than the next -- to secure the former Corinthians coach his third straight qualifying victory since taking over the national team.

And it was the Barcelona superstar who opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The Brazil No. 10, with one defender back, traded passes with Gabriel Jesus before tapping into a gaping net.

Philippe Coutinho added Brazil's second 15 minutes later, sweeping into the far corner after a wonderful solo run and layoff from Giuliano.

The Selecao collected their third in the 39th minute through Filipe Luis -- Neymar playing him in on goal before the Atletico Madrid man smashed past Bolivia goalkeeper Carlos Lampe at the near post.

Brazil then completed their dominating half with a dazzling counter-attack just before the break -- Gabriel Jesus lifting his left-footed shot into the roof of Lempe's net after receiving another well-weighted pass from Neymar behind the Bolivia defence.

Brazil took their foot off the gas in the second half. But substitute Roberto Firmino -- in for Neymar after the ex-Santos star's face was bloodied by a Bolivian elbow -- found a fifth a quarter-hour from time with an uncontested header in the box.

i

Playing without injured superstar Lionel Messi, Argentina hung on for a 2-2 draw against a very lively Peru.

Ramiro Funes Mori opened things up for La Albiceleste in the 15th minute, poking home with his right foot after a goalmouth scramble.

Peru struck back in the 58th minute, however, as captain Paolo Guerrero settled a floated cross in from Miguel Trauco and blasted home past Sergio Romero to level the score.

With Peru firmly on the front foot, Argentina found a moment of magic to retake the lead. Pablo Zabaleta found Gonzalo Higuain streaking into the Peru penalty area and the Juventus striker chipped home to give his team a 2-1 advantage.

Argentina didn't hold the lead for long, though, as a turnover in their defensive end saw Guerrero have an open run at the goal, only to be brought down in the penalty area by Funes Mori. Christian Cueva converted from the spot to put the match back on even terms and help earn his team a point.

i

Ecuador thrashed two-time defending Copa America champions Chile 3-0.

Antonio Valencia had a goal and an assist as Ecuador returned to form and extended Chile's poor start to the campaign.

Enner Valencia sent in a cross in the 19th minute that Antonio Valencia put past Claudio Bravo for the opener. And four minutes later, Bravo missed a chance to cut out Antonio Valencia's cross, and it fell for Cristian Ramirez to score.

Felipe Caicedo added a third goal one minute into the second half after redirecting Antonio Valencia's attempted shot.

But it was not all good news for Ecuador as Enner Valencia left the match on a stretcher late on.

Uruguay continued their strong campaign with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of visitors Venezuela in Monteivideo.

Edinson Cavani scored a brace and Nicolas Lodeiro added another as La Celeste ascended to the top of the qualifying table with the result.

And it was Lodeiro who put the hosts on top after 29 minutes. Luis Suarez's chipped cross from the left found the diving Seattle Sounders man, who powered his header off goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez and into the net.

Cavani scored Uruguay's second moments after the break -- the PSG forward powering his left footed volley into the far corner.

And he completed the scoreline 11 minutes from time, completing a sweeping move originating down the right with an easy finish of Suarez's deft layoff from close range.

In Asuncion, Colombia scored in injury time to beat Paraguay 1-0.

Playing without an injured James Rodriguez, who suffered a calf strain in warmups before Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Eibar on Sunday, the Colombians looked destined to take just one point home from Paraguay.

However, substitute Edwin Cardona connected with Carlos Bacca and slotted home from the centre of the penalty area to secure the win for Jose Pekerman's team.

Cristiano Ronaldo nets four goals as Portugal cruise; France, Belgium win

from espnfc.com

Cristiano Ronaldo scored four times, including two inside the opening four minutes as Portugal crushed Andorra 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Friday.

The Real Madrid star thought he had been hauled down during a corner about 70 seconds into the match, but when no whistle came he got up just in time to fire a rebound into the corner of the net.

And two minutes later Ronaldo was on target again with a simple header from a Ricardo Quaresma cross.

Portugal had plenty of more opportunities to score in the first half -- Andre Silva hit the bar with a header and keeper Josep Gomes denied Jose Fonte from close range -- before Joao Cancelo made it 3-0 with a shot from the tightest of angles.

Ronaldo began the second half just as he did the first, completing his hat trick two minutes after the restart with a powerful volley from the centre of the box.

After Andorra's Jordi Rubio then picked up two yellow cards in a 10-minute span, Ronaldo found his fourth goal, firing in a half-volley from six yards out.

Andorra's Marc Rebes was then sent off for a tackle on Ronaldo, and Andre Silva completed the rout against the nine men with a final goal in the 86th minute.

Kevin Gameiro scored twice as five-star France defeated Bulgaria 4-1 in Group A action at the Stade de France.

Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann also got on the scoresheet as France hit back after Mihail Alexandrov's early penalty.

Bacary Sagna atoned for conceding the penalty by curling in a superb cross for Gameiro to score with a firm glancing header. Another quickly followed when what seemed like a cross from the tricky Payet was not touched by the head of the diving Griezmann and bounced straight into the net.

Sagna left with an injury after 27 minutes, but France were still able to find a third before the break when Gameiro shot into the bottom corner.

Gameiro then added a second in the second half with a simple finish following a pass from Griezmann.

Quincy Promes scored his first two international goals as Netherlands overpowered Belarus 4-1 in Rotterdam.

The hosts had already spurned a handful of chances when Promes gave them the lead with a well-taken strike after 15 minutes, and he doubled the lead with a volley after 31 minutes.

Sergei Kornilenko pulled a goal back for Belarus, but Davy Klaassen soon pounced to extend the Dutch lead on 56 minutes after a Vincent Janssen strike came back off the post.

And Janssen wrapped up the points nine minutes later -- his shot from outside the box sensationally finding the top right corner of Belarus goalkeeper Andrey Gorbunov's net.

Mikael Lustig's 58th-minute strike sent Sweden past Luxembourg 1-0 in the final Group A match on the night, the Celtic defender firing home from the center of the box after a corner.

The win placed the Swedes on four points in the group, level at the top with France and Netherlands after two rounds of matches.

In Group H, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku scored as Belgium earned a second-straight win by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-0.

The hosts were gifted the lead on 26 minutes thanks to an own goal from Emir Spahic, who unwisely stuck out a foot to put a deflected cross into his own net.

But three minutes later Hazard delivered a worthy second goal, running onto a Dries Mertens through ball and past a helpless Asmir Begovic, his teammate from Chelsea.

Toby Alderweireld added Belgium's third in the second half with a back-heeled flick following a corner, and Lukaku made up for a horrible miss earlier in the game with a fine strike to cap the scoring.

Greece kept pace with Belgium atop Group H with a 2-0 home win over Cyprus.

Kostas Mitroglou opened the scoring on 12 minutes, lashing home a pass from Konstantinos Fortounis.

It got worse for Cyprus before the break when goalkeeper Konstantinos Panagiotoudis attempted to roll the ball out to a teammate, only for Petros Mantalos to intercept it and double Greece's lead.

Estonia scored all their goals of a 4-0 win in the second half to crush Gibraltar's hopes of a first-ever point in World Cup qualifying.

After a quiet first half, Mattias Kaeit broke the deadlock two minutes after the break, and after Konstantin Vassiljev added a second five minutes later, Kaeit netted his second of the night and Sergei Mosnikov wrapped up the scoring late on.

Also in Portugal's Group B, Switzerland's Valentin Stocker scored in the 89th minute to steal a 3-2 win at Hungary.

After a goalless first half, Haris Seferovic found the breakthough for the Swiss, but Adam Szalai tapped in a rebound off the post to make it 1-1.

Ricardo Rodriguez restored Switzerland's lead on 67 minutes, but Szalai answered again with a header from close-range to secure a share of the points.

But with one minute to play Stocker poked the ball home following a long throw-in and two flicked-on headed passes for the winner.

The Faroe Islands are surprisingly in second place in Group B after managing a 2-0 win at Latvia.

Sonni Nattestad put the Faroes ahead on 19 minutes before Joan Simun Edmundsson doubled the lead in the 70th.

In Europe, I find these WC qualifiers ultimately pointless.

There really should be a play-off round of games where the minnows have to win before they even get at shot at the big boys.
A waste of time seeing European heavyweights playing Bulgaria, Faroe Islands, Andorra, Gibraltar and Belarus and giving them a good thrashing.

Having said that, I hope Malta can pull off a shock result against England.

the fans expected more like 6 or 7 ! will Rooney score a goal ever again ?

Agreed, should have been at least 5 or 6 nil. With only the winners of each group guaranteed to qualify, goal difference could prove vital.

The better question is will Rooney ever play (for England) again. Under Southgate, probably but again last nite , he was invisible against Malta.
