In a strongly worded Facebook posting, MP for Tampines GRC Irene Ng took issue with the Indonesian government for trying to shift the blame for the haze to other countries.

On Monday, an Indonesian forestry ministry official said Singaporean and Malaysian palm oil companies in Indonesia were also responsible for the haze.

Ms Ng said: "Indonesia is being quite disingenuous to try to shift the blame for the haze to other countries like Singapore and Malaysia. It is up to Indonesia to prosecute commercial companies, regardless of ownership."

She added: "All ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, already have domestic legislation which prohibits the use of fire for forest clearance in their own countries. The local authorities must enforce it.

"There are currently no legal sanctions which Singapore can apply against plantation companies whose extra-territorial actions affect our local environment."

She said Singaporeans could apply commercial pressure by boycotting products from these companies and to demand for products that come from sustainable sources.

This was advocated as long as 15 years ago. The PAPzis and the PIMP said then that this was impractical and would not help. This probably is just a PAPzi bu doing what Janil Putucheary did for 'free MRT rides'.

Say "no" to Palm Oil: http://www.saynotopalmoil.com/palm-oil.php

Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. Oil palms are originally from Western Africa, but can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. Today, almost all palm oil is produced in, and exported from, Indonesia and Malaysia; but most of the time not using sustainable measures.

Vast areas of pristine rainforest is slashed and burned each year in order to make way for oil palm plantations. Many orangutans and other wildlife are killed in the process, so that this one vegetable oil can be used in many of our everyday foods and products.

Palm oil is an extremely popular vegetable oil amongst manufacturers. It is used in over 50% of products, including: baked goods, confectionery, cosmetics, body products and cleaning agents. But in many countries, there is no law on the mandatory labelling of palm oil. Consequently, companies will usually hide palm oil under the name of 'vegetable oil', or over 170 other names!

There is nothing wrong with palm oil. What's wrong is unregulated or poorly regulated commercial activities.

This is what you'll inevitably get if you privatize everything and 'leave it to the free market', as some twits here are proponents of.

Oh and Irene Ng... you probably should STFU. George Yeo is not happy with your comments.

The plantation owners priority is to their shareholders. They have cut costs and maximized profits by clearing land using the cheapest and most efficient method. This is simply capitalism at work!

Capitalism does not require the CEO to put himself at risk of being imprisoned.

Yes, Indonesia should charge all these companies, irrespective of who owns them. Will they do it? Fat chance!!
Have everybody who is anybody in this saga, government agencies, plantation owners, politicians, ASEAN and the Indonesian public done anything for the past 16 years? Nope!
Does Ms Irene Ng know the points above? Yes! If no, then she is brain dead. Which I have to admit might also be true...
So is she doing this for political brownie points and/or orchestrated by the PAP? Yes and sweet Jesus, YES!!

So, finally, in my humble opinion, nobody responsible in Indonesia is going to give a rat's ass about all this smoke as they are comfortably living in Jakarta. ASEAN, which includes Malaysia and Singapore, limply make some polite noises, attend well-fed meetings and conferences for 16 years, and stay indoors. The general public in both countries bear the brunt of this crap.

My mother who had some lung related problems got affected by the 1997 episode, got worse and died a couple of years later. I sincerely hope no one else, including Ms Irene Ng has to go thru what my family did. But sadly, I'm not too optimistic....

If the Singapore Govt is really concerned, it will be a cabinet minister that would have come out with a strong statement about the haze. They should share with Singaporeans what they plan to do. An inconsequential MP whose claim to fame is riding bicycles on pedestrian paths and finding her partner in Scotland is a joke.

We have satellites that can pinpoint errant holdings at least the big ones, diplomatic pressure , sanctions etc should be pursued. We laugh at Shanghai and Beijing for their smog and pollution and we ourselves struggle.

Instead the minister only comes out when there is an issue with cleaning contracts.

Seems like karma. So soon after the PM made those tasteless jokes we now suffer the consequences. He is simply bad news. Full stop!
For those who say the haze is a yearly occurrence, I think most S'porns will say that they could not remember the instances over the past few years. If there were such instances obviously they were of no significance for anyone to remember.
