Quote:>>>One of the highlights of his years as a civil servant was his role in the handling of terrorists who hijacked the passenger ferry Laju in 1974, after they failed to blow up oil tanks on Pulau Bukom. Mr Nathan, then the director of the Defence Ministry's Security and Intelligence Department, helped to negotiate the successful release of the hostages.<<<

I think SR Nathan has got his facts wrong or he is not telling the truth:
1) the bombers managed to blow-up at least one oil storage tank in Pulau Bukom with explosives as a warning.
2) if their demands were not met, they were prepared to blow-up all the oil storage tanks in Pulau Bukom with explosives. That is why the Singapore government gave in to their demands.
3) they were all given a safe passage out of Singapore because the Singapore government give in to their demands. The hijackers were escorted by four Singapore Commandos, one if I remembered clearly was the CO of 1st Commando Battalion, then LTC Clerence Tan.
4) the hijackers belonged or had connection with the Black September group in the Middle-East. Two belonged to the Japanese Red Army and two belonged to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
This is as far as my memory serves me, and I stand to be corrected.
