The 2nd part of Singapore 1942 is even more interesting than the first.

  • The military strategy failures of the British are stated even more clearly than what I know from school.
  • With the cooperation of Johor Sultan and fake troop movement, the Japs fooled the Brits.
  • The ethnic cleansing of Chinese in Jap Occupied Singapore

Watch the programme online. Don't miss!

For those who want to see how the colonial masters BETRAYED Singapore.

The pride of Empire was more IMPORTANT than the lives of Singapore residents (the colonial subjects were made the sacrifice!).

Churchhill want Singapore defended to the last civilian.

Reflection:
Seeing the End of British Empire played out in the documentary, there are some similarity with today's UK.
A country in denial over the seriousness of its financial debts.
Britain today is in economic sunset. It could be terminal as it becomes as poor as Portugal. Even Scotland is seeking independence from United Kingdom.
The British expats today are just as stupid as their colonial daddies.

thanks bro, great stuff there.
am sure Mr Jeyathurai would be interested in these, wondered if National Archives would have kept any diaries from the POWs from down under during WWII...:confused::confused:

There is a book titled 'The Unpeneratable Jungle' which you can borrow in the Aus library.

This book described the ways UK Pommies moved their battle ships to Ceylon (Sir Lanka) from Singapore to standby fight against Hitler. This left Singaore venerable to Jap invasion. Then the UK Brit dragged any young Ozzies males in Sydney Streets to fight in Malaysia and Singapore without any military trainings. Some never seen a Jap or what a Jap solider look like. So they are fed with girls to fuck first then send them to hell to be killed by Japs. What you seen on TV was half the story from Oz point of view.

Cant blame the UK Pommies when their own motherland was under threat in wars with Hitler.

Saw the first half and did note the switching of sides with the Indians. I suppose the history books we read in schools are "censored" to preserve racial harmony. I even remember the "brave" Indians fighting the Japanese.

You want the truth behind the fall of Singapore to Japan? Can you handle the truth? Here it goes.

It was a strategic surrender. The British did abandon Singapore and Malaya, so did the Americans abandon Phillipines, so did the Dutch abandon Indonesia, so did the French abandon Vietnam. Why? How could a cartel of colonial powers lose a whole subcontinent (SEA) to one single Japan at the same time? The answer is still strategic. It was to stretch the Japanese forces so far and wide that there wouldn't be any possibility of swift regrouping and US would finish Japan off in one stroke when time came. The Dutch and French had their domestic problems too, being under German occupation at that time. There was no other way out for them except to play along with the US-UK strategy. They could bear to do that because we're not their people. They wouldn't do that with Australia or NZ.

From OZ point of view, mother UK took away all its soldiers leaving the country defenseless.

The Aussies sent to Singapore were untrained. (Those Aussies, sent from England, diverted from Burma were)

The program did highlight about the the good time these soldiers had in Singapore with the dance hall, "taxi" dancers (nice term) and about this female Aussie journalist who was shocked at the great time the men were having, and reported this back to Australia - angering the countrymen.

It also show a coward Aussie troop captain who escaped in a sampan leaving his troops behind for POW. "He never lead another troop again!"

If what you said is correct, the colonial masters made a lousy decision! Singaporeans these days live under the fear of PAP. In Those days, they live knowing that the Angmos are superior humans. The surrender broke the myth!

Basically, surrendering was not an option then. Britain had no resources left, Pearl Habour was destroyed, leaving the US helpless in the Pacific theatre.
I would say that Japan over-extend itself.

There are more bombs dropped in the Bombing of Darwin than in Pearl Habour, but the news blackout in Australia downplayed the seriousness of the attack. Because Australia was defenseless at that point in time.

Churchhill and Roosevelt were furious that the Aussie want their trained soldiers back.

At the end of the day, the Brits were in denial over Fortess Singapore and dumb Japs who cannot shoot. This was not unexpected, given the good lives of the British masters, each of them a mini King/Queen/Prince/Princess over in the Empire. It had to be done to show that the Angmos are masters. How can asian Japs be their equal.

Watch the programme to know more.

Lousy or not, it's up to history to judge. The equation obviously hinged on that Britain must not fall and open up Altantic, Canada and US to German invasion. Second in allied line of defense was Australia and New Zealand against Japan. The Japanese were totally overstretched by the time they reached Indonesia, so ANZ were quite safe. With or without Pearl Harbor, US Navy was also fully geared to guard against Japanese invasion from the Pacific side. See? SEA was the sacrificial pawn in the game.

The Ep 2 of the programme did a quick summary of post WWII Singapore. As usual, an Aussie program will not censor what happened.
Eg LKY made a mistake of wanting to create a Malaysian Malaysia when the combined population will bring more Chinese into Malaysia. It would never worked and created race riots.

Remember, the Malays supported the Japs to kick out the British because they brought Chinese coolies & Indian administrators into their colonies. These (FT) people ended up richer than the Malays themselves.

If not mistaken, that was Lieutenant General Gordon Bennett the Commander of the AIF troops in Spore.. He was a disgrace.. He and his aides stole a sampan at gunpoint.. Once read in a book that, Percival and other British millitiary chiefs in Spore had a difficult working relationship with him during the defence planning of Spore.. After Percival was released from Japanese captivity, he then blamed Bennett for leaving Spore without his permission..

Yes.
Despite highly decorated achievements during World War I, including at Gallipoli, Bennett is best remembered for his role in the Fall of Singapore in the Pacific War when, as commander of the 8th Division, he escaped while his men became prisoners of the Japanese.

On the other hand, Percival was a reject (despite being respected for winning a few WWI battles) from the British army so he was sent to Singapore to guard the fortress. (All the good ones were fighting the Axis)
He was totally conned by the Japs, including where they will land in Singapore.
But he earned the respect of his soldiers by being a POW and served together with his men.

From ancient to modern times, cannot blame the generals or credit them for winning or losing battles and wars, unless they have absolute powers in both political objectives and military strategies, e.g. ancient kings and emperors leading the armies themselves, sending princes with carte blanc to lead the armies. Sometimes. generals on the fields would be made scapegoats for political movties of their political overlords. Those politically astute would know how to balance between these.

It's well known that many Japanese generals and admirals advised against the raid of Pearl Habor and extension of invasion into SEA, just like many German generals advised against the battles of Britain and Russia. Those were not hindsights. Those were from recovered from diaries and documents of those times.

from the diaries and documents, many Japanese leaders could see the trap lying ahead for Japan after her further expansion southwards but there were no way out for them except to engage in a suicidal war with USA. Japan leaders knew very well that Japan was no match for the United States militarily. the western countries will never allow Japan to overturn the existing order in Asia without consequences.

"honorable" retreat from China and suffer the consequences of loss of prestige, resources, and military position or a policy of patience for events to turn to Japan's advantages were ruled out. taking the offensive in 1941, fighting the war until the end to preserve Japanese honor was the most preferable of three bad choices.

The Japan Imperial Army moved southwards for the motive to secure vital resources such as tin, timber and others...because the Allied imposed an embargo on Japan in support of China (ROC).

The sneak attack on Pearl Harbour was a prelude to this invasion - as the JIA saw that the US would enter the war sooner than later. Of course, they had grossly underestimated the determination of the US to strike back after that.
At that moment, the JIA had no way back too - they were fighting on all fronts, including internal pressure to oust the war-crazy generals who had controlled the government.

There was also the unknown factor of communist Russia who switched side and declared war on Japan-held Manchuria that sealed their fate. The sea battles fought between the US and JIA were touch-and-go too.

In the later part of the War, according to documentaries, the parents of the dead IJA would secretly wish their sons had not gone for honour. We are talking about almost an entire generations of people brainwashed into thinking they were all samurais, living (and dying) according to rules of Bushido.

The course of history recording an aggresive Japan is set when a certain Hideki Tōjō made his way to the position of Prime Minister. He removed all radical-thinking political enemies and set Japan onto a warpath of destruction home and afar. He tapped into the minds of millions of young recruits who are ready to die for their heavenly Emperor.
This was one mad man, a Japanese-version Hilter.

To his credit, he took personal responsibility (hence abstaining that of the Emperor) for all war crimes committed in the War. He tried committing suicide but survived, and eventually lived to be executed in place of the Royal family.

(It may not be entirely Tojo's work for IJA to invade other countries, as imperial Japan was already showing aggression to expand its empire prior to his appointment. )

thanks for the info, bro. very insightful :):):)

could safely say that much of the ground work in South East Asia and even in the Pacific had been done much earlier: aerial photographs of the various locations in Pearl Harbor were taken, spies gathering information on the locals, the design of the Death Railway, etc...

In the beginning of Japanese rise to power, Japan only wanted Kuriles, Okinawa (Ryukyu) and Taiwan as extension of its archipaelago. They looked at it from a geographical point of view. They got Kuriles by beating Russia, Okinawa by beating Korea and Taiwan by beating China, in the process colonizing Korea too.

This is a process of when you got something, you want something more. The successful ROC revolution against Qing China gave Japan a bigger idea for bigger things to come. That's known as the Tanaka doctrine. Since Qing Dynasty had been defeated by Han Chinese, Manchuria shoudn't be part of China anymore. Riding on that, Japan sponsored Puyi (last Qing Emperor Xuantong) to declare Manchuria (3 provinces) as an independent kingdom (Manchukuo).

The control over the seas from Kuriles to Taiwan and lands from Manchuria and Korea would render the Japanese supreme in the Far East.
