CPF Minimum Sum

From 1 July 2014, the Minimum Sum (MS) will be revised to $155,000 for members turning 55 from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015.

As Singaporeans are living longer, we will need a steady stream of income to meet our basic living expenses in our retirement years. The MS set aside at 55 enables CPF members to receive monthly payouts for life from age 65.

The MS has been adjusted yearly to help each group of CPF members turning 55 set aside enough savings to maintain a basic standard of living in retirement. The MS for members who have already turned 55 remains unchanged.

We should be asking why can't the CPF be turned into a pension? With that pool of funds, it could generate returns sufficient to pay out at least 25 percent of one working income upon retirement.
