The religions you mentioned allow the Chinese to remain Chinese. Can still do ancestor worship, eat pork and drink alcohol. For Islam,,cannot eat pork and drink alcohol. Does not appeal to me..cannot eat pork might as well dont live,,,,But I have met some European muslims who eat bacon and drink alcohol as they practice a more tolerant form of Islam. For the Singapore/Malaysia type of Islam, they are more strict.So harder to find followers.

the Chinese made up a significant sizeable minority within Malaysia. of course. they deserve the right to demand more say in the running affairs of the country so that they can protect and carry on with their preferred way of life. the Chinese in Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia were an insignificant minority by size in their countries. therefore they obediently adapt the language and religion of the majority and accept whatever marginalization, social or politically in their societies if it happened over there.

And the majority of Singaporean Christians are not Catholics, but are Protestants or belong to various non-denominational sects. About a third of Singaporeans are Christians today.

And talking about tolerance, Jehovah Witnesses go to jail for not serving NS, and Seventh Day adventists carry wooden rifles in NS, and Mormons are forbidden from taking drinks containing caffeine. Looking at a woman with lust counts as adultery, and brimstone and hellfire await all heathens.

But those who think that they can change the government without the support coming from the Malays majority should have their heads examined. Islam is no more stricter or intolerant than Christanity who has almost a quarter of chinese professing in Singapore and many more in Indonesia, China and overseas Chinese communities throughout the world. Some fundamentalist Christianity like CHC and NCC which congregation are almost all chinese totally prohibited many chinese customs, traditions and culture, including ancestor worship. In this case, the chinese should have no problem converting into Islam.

I guess it is the Malay rulers and the government itself who intentionally allow the chinese to freely continue their own cultural practices so that they can become a distinct group to use as a scapegoat when politics didn''t go their way. I had a chinese friend from Malaysia who was interetsed in Islam but he was discouraged because he was a chinese and he eat pork... and the Malays friends instead encourage him to go back to his own roots and culture! In a way, the govt sees Islam as a separate entiity for themselves only and the chinese are not allow to intrude this sacred space . This was in the early 70s when the chinese elsewhere was encourage to assimiliate into their countries of adoption but Msia didn't.

It is thus very unfair for the BN and Malay govt to put blame on the chinese whenever there are problems in the country...accusing the innocent chinese of disloyal,selfish,chauvinist and all sorts of accusations. Now extremists in his part have accuse PM Najib of making the Chinese even more distinctive by offering them alot of incentives to preserve their own culture, language and religion. In fact, Najib is the only Msian PM who has been very inclusive and very friendly to the chinese, even attending their temple events, wearing the chinese gua during CNY and speaking in Mandarin. He also promised govt grants for the chinese community build more chinese schools.!!. Thus, he is responsible for making the chinese community further away from being part of the Msian identitiy . As mentioned, even Spore as a chinese state do away with these but making English as a medium of communication and chinese schools and chinese dialects were disallowed so that a there is a real Singapore identity.

The extremists should not be trading barbs at the chinese community when the problems they faced today is their own doing. Their intention of making the chinese community distinct create the very problems that they are nowing trying to ironically blame the chinese whch is totally uncalled for.It should follow the other SEA countries such as Thailand and Indonesia to completely assimiliate the chinese instead of intentionally creating this distinct separate community for poking now and then. If Najib is serious and concern about his chinese minority, he should see these examples and assist the chinese to quickly assimiliate into the larger community instead of pulling them further apart and then blame them when the opportunity rises.

Yes, fully agreed on this. I am not sure why the chinese were so confident of changing govt when they are just 23% of the population. Some said the chinese were taken in by Anwar charisma and craftiness who seems able to control the chinese Msians whatever way he likes such as asking them to vote for him to be the new PM and now ask them to protest the supposedly election fraud when actually the chinese DAP almost won all the seats it contested. The chinese join him the rain in the stadium but actually they were helping PAS and PRK 出气， If we observe the protests carefully , though cloaked as multi-racial Malaysian gathering,it is the chinese who still consitute the largest numbers of protesters even though there were also smaller no of malays and indians protesters. Now they may also have no chinese ministers in the malaysian govt at all.

Having stay relatively peacefully with no major racial disturbance for the past 40 plusyears , they might also now antagonise the Malays.

It is quite sad and painful when we see the chinese malaysians predicament. They are like being lead around by shrewd crafty selfish politicans for their own agenda, yet they still genuinely hoping of empty promises...sad.
