People do not really understand this, the PAP government have access to an extremely cheap unlimited funds ( CPF) in which no other government on this earth can have, without any restrictions, protest. They can, enact laws, rules & conditions to prevent us from touching our hard earned, blood , sweat & tears money & this cannot go on for another 50 years....one day, the people, will wake up to find out...the money is gone..can you be so trusting & so charitable??

The big problem is there seems to be no limits to where the MIWs r prepared to go. 6.9m, maybe next time 7.5 m and so. CPF min sum $155k now, maybe $170k or $200k.... Withdrawal age 55, 62, maybe 70, 80.... the list goes on and on....All the reassurances r now bullshit to a lot of people...

There's no MAYBE about it. It's written in stone. Chop, confirm, sealed.


In 2006, I realised the inflation rate used by the CPF was close to 6% per annum since the Minimum Sum scheme was introduced in 2003. I used that rate to forecast the amount I would be dealing with at the year I turn 55 and I didn't like what I saw (if things continue to go on the same way). Sadly, a decade of data reaffirms that the Minimum Sum has been increasing around 6.3% year-on-year, worse in the 6% rate I used to project in fact. I would update my calculations today:

If you are 50 years old today, your Minimum Sum by your 55th birthday is likely to be $207,000
If you are 40 years old today, your Minimum Sum by your 55th birthday is likely to be $371,000
If you are 30 years old today, your Minimum Sum by your 55th birthday is likely to be $665,000
If you are 20 years old today, your Minimum Sum by your 55th birthday is likely to be $1,119,000

There is no cheap way out of this situation. A study with good sample size which I am aware of suggests that Singaporeans are looking for 6% to 8% returns on their CPF savings. Any rate of return below that and they feel that the PAP jiak them. The modest 0.5% increase which they are thinking of is therefore completely inadequate to resolve the situation. They are going to have to do something a lot more dramatic or this will haunt them in GE 2016 like the way high HDB prices haunted them during GE2011.

Quite a dilemma for them. The longer they wait the more votes they lose. It is getting pretty irrational now. When I got a traffic ticket with a hefty fine I wondered how many people like me had a knee jerk reaction like "dammit, wish the GE was tomorrow".
