3 inmates killed in Pattani prison riot
Published: 5/09/2011 at 12:33 PM
Online news:
Three inmates were killed in a riot in Pattani Central Prison, as security officers were unable to put the situation under control, reports said on Monday morning.
Reports said more than 40 prisoners started attacking about five fellow inmates, who later fled to the roof of a dormitory. However, three of them accidentally fell from the roof and were seriously wounded.
The three were reportedly beaten to death by the rioting inmates.
Prison wardens were unable to help those attacked inside the prison as they were outnumbered by the rioters.
The number of rioters swelled to about 200 after officers were forced to release more prisoners from Narathiwat and Yala blocks.
The reports said the 1,200 inmates in Pattani Central Prison were divided into two groups. About 800 joined the rioting group while about 400 others decided not to take part in the riot.
Officers said some rioting prisoners were pounding on the walls in an attempt to escape.
Police, soldiers and administrative officials from other areas were called upon to help control the situation.
Pattani Central Prison chief Arwut Suwanno said more than 300 riot suppression officers had been summoned to quell the riot.
Pattani deputy governor Lertkiat Wongpopan travelled to Pattani Central Prison and called an urgent meeting to discuss ways to put the situation under control.
