Temasek invests $46.3m in Tudou
05:55 AM Aug 06, 2010
SHANGHAI - Singapore investment company Temasek Holdings is ploughing US$35 million ($46.3 million) into Tudou, accounting for the largest portion of the Chinese online video company's latest round of equity financing worth US$50 million.

Temasek's investment in Shanghai-based Tudou is its first in the Internet sector in China, which boasts the most number of online users in the world. Tudou, which is Chinese for potato, streams videos online, including syndicated television shows as well as user-uploaded content.

The highly-popular website, which was registered in July 2004 and went live the following year, currently ranks 12th in China and 67th in the world, according to online traffic monitoring company Alexa.

Tudou held a 12.8-per-cent share of China's 313 million yuan ($61 million) online video market by advertising revenues in the first quarter, according to a Financial Times report citing Analysys, the Beijing-based Internet research company. Youku led the industry with 17.7 per cent, the FT report said.

Tudou chief executive Gary Wang was quoted in the Wall Street Journal yesterday as saying: "We have been positioning ourselves as a media house and there's a lot of expertise to be developed.

"We believe this is not something about the short term. It's going to be a long marathon, so it's very important to be strong and cover all the angles and make sure we will still be in a leading position in two or three years."

Tudou is also developing applications for Apple's iPhones as well as handsets running Google's Android operating system, so that all 38 million videos available on the website will be available for viewing on its mobile apps within a month, the WSJ quoted Mr Wang as saying. Agencies

Buying over den is really nuts. Anyway, Tudou is a website providing movies for download. It will never expand outside China cos it will get sued upside down.

i do not understand why a singapore investment company is investing in a china company that is providing FREE movies for downloads with no need to pay copyright fees to movie distributors. I am stopping short of saying piracy. What an irony.

That means Temasek supports websites that encourage piracy?:o

when this company goes into public listing... temasek will earn more peanuts than they invested.

See how those private equity and buyout firms does... bring a public company private and then 'renovate' and then again put in public listing... voila $$$ !!!

Temasek invest in company to get a stake before they go public. Usually IPO prices are so fucking expensive priced.

Remember the new remisier kings from UOB Kay Hian... the 2 cousins. They brought in many china IPOs into local markets during the china IPO craze. Public were paying like 50cent to $1 for those IPO shares but these 2 guys were taking stake in the IPO companies at few cents per share. Literally printing $$$ !!! :D

More director fees, more dividends, more bonuses, think of ways to empty out this shell.

before xin msn was launched tudou was a good place to check out channel 8 dramas. If not you have to pay mediacock 1 months' subscription to watch all their crappy dramas.

Btw all of these movies and dramas are uploaded by the users and tudou merely hosts them on the site. The site makers are not responsible for the content hosted. Yes they encourage piracy unlike youtube which will del any copyrighted vids.
