05:55 AM Aug 06, 2010
SHANGHAI - Singapore investment company Temasek Holdings is ploughing US$35 million ($46.3 million) into Tudou, accounting for the largest portion of the Chinese online video company's latest round of equity financing worth US$50 million.
Temasek's investment in Shanghai-based Tudou is its first in the Internet sector in China, which boasts the most number of online users in the world. Tudou, which is Chinese for potato, streams videos online, including syndicated television shows as well as user-uploaded content.
The highly-popular website, which was registered in July 2004 and went live the following year, currently ranks 12th in China and 67th in the world, according to online traffic monitoring company Alexa.
Tudou held a 12.8-per-cent share of China's 313 million yuan ($61 million) online video market by advertising revenues in the first quarter, according to a Financial Times report citing Analysys, the Beijing-based Internet research company. Youku led the industry with 17.7 per cent, the FT report said.
Tudou chief executive Gary Wang was quoted in the Wall Street Journal yesterday as saying: "We have been positioning ourselves as a media house and there's a lot of expertise to be developed.
"We believe this is not something about the short term. It's going to be a long marathon, so it's very important to be strong and cover all the angles and make sure we will still be in a leading position in two or three years."
Tudou is also developing applications for Apple's iPhones as well as handsets running Google's Android operating system, so that all 38 million videos available on the website will be available for viewing on its mobile apps within a month, the WSJ quoted Mr Wang as saying. Agencies
