STOMPer Gina is upset with a taxi driver who slowed down for her, but changed his mind and drove away when he noticed she had flagged him for an elderly woman in a wheelchair.

She said in her email:

"This morning I was waiting for cab and before me, there was a maid with an elderly lady in a wheelchair trying to get a cab as well.

"From a distance I saw a blue comfort cab (Green - free for hire).

"I flagged it so the ladies could take the cab first.

"The cab slowed down and stopped in front of me as I signalled him to wait for a while, and pointed the wheel chair lady to him, expecting him to come out and help her into the cab at least.

"However, to our dismay, when he saw the lady in the wheelchair, he immediately turned away and drove down only to stop a few meters away to pick up a young lady, whom just step into the nearby bus stop!

"Still shocked and saddened by the situation, the elderly lady looked at me, as if embarrassed by the situation and told me to get a cab on my own and let them be, as if she felt its was her fault to be in bound in a wheel chair.

There was no reason for him to turn away and drove off, he did stop for me at first and i witness him looking at the wheeled chair lady and obviously turned away.

"Discrimination. I am utterly disgusted by his actions, and shocked by his defiance to the service quality he has projected on himself and the company.

"What if this happens to your mum, sis or grandmother?

"I’m very affected by this incident, it worries me that such things could happen again to my love ones.

"I hope LTA will take action and explain why such service can happen and how can the company hire such a person to represent your company."

lianbeng has seen it many times liao - they will siam anyone on wheelchair, crutches, walking frames, baby strollers, etc...:D

Lets be fair to all the other taxi drivers.

Most of them even come out of the car and help fold the wheelchair into the boot.

Taxi drivers are human too.

I have also known some that never accept money from such invalids.

Generally, the behaviour of S'pore taxi drivers is deplorable.

In truly 1st World countries cab drivers would demonstrate great compassion for the elderly, the ill, the infirm or the disabled.

Ever hear of karma? Well, the taxi driver will know what it is soon enuf..

The LTA should phase out current batch of taxis (especially the Sonata - they are fast and one can see many of them on the road everyday, speeding) and have all taxis in the form of London taxis. They don't speed, can carry luggage and wheelchairs and passengers comfortably. With an aging population, these taxis would be of great help. They are also of EU emission standards. (plus it would help the UK economy and the taxi manufacturer) The LTA's decision to limit London taxis on our roads defies logic and common sense, which our highly paid and intelligent decision makers in recent years seem to display a huge dearth of. Given the way our country is run these days, with major issues surfacing quite frequently, one wonders what prompted the LTA to do that.

You have done a worthy thing - trying to help an old lady. What would be better is to take down the number of the particular taxi so that the correct driver could be taken to task.

Complaining in general likewise will not serve any purpose. Don't forget there are also decent and good taxi drivers around. You just came across an ugly one![

Yes. Not only the old or feeble minded human. But never never ignore or criticise the unfortunates and the handicaps like the autistic, blind....or even the HIV patients!

hi there

1. honest, i don't think all cab drivers will do that to some wheelchair bound individuals.
2. likewise, kraft aka hotbot will help the individual too.
3. but of course, there are always some bad apples.
