Dear JW5,
It is NOT about friendly or anti-PAP stance for opposition members!
It is about whether you can speak up for the people's interests or not. You could well be speaking up but engage in a more positive way without taking PAP as "enemy". They are just opponents of differing views on policy directions.
It is not right to say that because some are "friendly" with PAP that means they are in for their own interests. What interests are you talking about? It is just a matter of different engagement methodologies.
In fact, most middle ground voters would appreciate people who engage politics in a more balanced and "positive" ways; in the simplest saying, "not opposing for the sake of opposing". That is why WP is quite successful in capturing this group of voters.
There is no need to "go all out" to declare or act in a way that PAP is "devious enemy". For the middle ground, they still feel that PAP's rule provides the necessary stability and not totally wrong on some policies. They just want some selective opposition members to provide more rational policy discourse in parliament serving as a check and balance to PAP.
If we are to win the confidence and trust of the middle ground, it will not help us if we are all out to hammer PAP as though everything it did was wrong. The middle ground voters are not stupid. They are educated and discerning on various issues. They are conservative in the sense that they do not view potential disruptive behaviors of enmity between opposition parties and PAP in positive light. In fact that is why PAP's MSM has always sent subliminal messages of politicians throwing chairs and tables in Taiwanese parliament as examples of "ills of democracy".
WP and I to a certain extent, understands this very well. Of course I have "handicaps" to start with and I have to position myself right in the middle, the true moderate positioning. I have to make enough noises on policy issues, not targeting against personalities of PAP key personnel. The middle ground will take note of those who can make good points on policy issues and ignore those constant hammering on PAP based on rhetorical bashing.
Of course, we cannot please everyone in the process. Some hardcore anti-PAP people here and at large will not like it when "friendly engagement" is made with PAP. eg. photo taken with PAP MP and certain praises being made. But I hope that all these must be viewed in context.

Some opposition members are more friendly towards the pap than their fellow oppositon members for a simple reason. And that is because they are in this for themselves and not for the people of Singapore. They ingratiate themselves towards those whom they think can benefit them most, and they fear those who are a threat to their own personal ambitions. Of course, the former can include fellow opposition members and the latter can include pappies as well.
Some opposition members are in this more so to oppose the pap and to voice out their own personal grievances, than to help and benefit fellow Singaporeans. Anyone who helps them to oppose the pap and share a personal grievance, is their friend. This lot appears to have lost the plot on what is the purpose of having an opposition in the first place.
Don't know where TKL stands and don't really care. But I'm interested to know whether he still thinks that a person who purports to represent the people, should get a petition from the voters before he decides whether or not to stand for election.
