Mr Tan has served in various capacities in the government. He was previously deputy secretary (services) at the Ministry of Education, chief executive of the Singapore Land Authority and deputy secretary (administration) at the Ministry of Defence.
He is an Overseas Merit Scholar with a first-class honours degree in mathematics from the University of London and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University.
