My one not make-believe boyfriend

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday reiterated his worry that not enough Singaporeans are starting families. --PHOTO: ZAOBAO

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday reiterated his worry that not enough Singaporeans are starting families. Total fertility rate last year hit a new low of 1.23. For the Chinese community here, it was even lower at 1.09.

But falling birth rate is an issue faced by East Asian countries, he noted, and it is partly a result of changing values.

In China, young people, to avoid nagging from their parents, have resorted to 'renting' a boyfriend or girlfriend to take home during this new year period, Mr Lee observed.

'It's amusing, but it's also sad,' he said at a Chinese New Year dinner at his Teck Ghee constituency. 'I'm relieved there's no such reports in Singapore. I hope it doesn't happen. My one not make-believe boyfriend.' Still, a little social pressure is useful but more importantly, parents and relatives need to encourage them and show them support.

Unmarried residents interviewed said they first needed to save enough and have a stable career before settling down and starting a family.

Said Mr Jason Quak, 28, an operations manager: 'Now you need money for everything, especially for a wedding.'

He and his 25-year-old girlfriend want to buy a flat in Ang Mo Kio, near his parents, but he is not confident he can find one within his budget of around $300,000.

i think its a distraction ploy ...

other developed nations also having declining birthrate but their leaders are not unduly worried, nor do they nag & nag like that ...

some ppl will fall for this nonsense & blame themselves eg. singles, childless couples ... & then become depressed, self deprecating, etc ...

but its a ploy to cover up the real problems in s'pore, & i tell u, s'pore now has plenty of problems ... ranging from environment, pollution, unemployment, income stagnation, financial & a whole multitude of social problems that werent there before ... and ofcos my pet peeve overcrowding ...

a lot of animal species are nearing extinction due to deforestation & environmental damage; man is the only species that is ballooning ...

if u see yourself as a valued inhabitant of Planet Earth, our dear one-and-only Planet Earth ... then u shd have at most only one child if u feel comfortable with that ... and if childless or single - be happy & feel good abt yourself - don't allow mankind to overpopulate & overwhelm our natural resources ... & don't let Crazy Loong run u down ... he wants more babies bcos in his kingdom singapore, more money = fatter wallet for him & his family ...

my call to all for the Year of the Tiger 2010 is to have as few babies as u and your spouse feel comfortable with ... remember the old adage (actually this was coined by PAP itself -- 'the more u have, the less they get -- two is enough' ...

cheers !

* thumb nose to Loong *

He's OUT OF TOUCH. He's the highest paid leader on planet Earth. He's not leading his country but having a permanent holiday.

If he's leading, he should be talking about problems of the day :
casino/crime,
deluge of foreigners in Singapore,
super high cost of living/poor quality of life,
overcrowding and breaking points in public infrastructure,
govt poor investments, what's the ROI?
etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc,etc...

Why no babies? Because of the problems!

I agree with you its a simple distraction ploy. Not all developed nations are having a declining birthrate. Just look at Australia, it has been increasing in the last 5 years. from 1.7 to 1.9 now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_rate_and_fertility_rate_in_Australia

I believe the PAPies are not as dumb as they seem. They know what causes the decline in birthrate. They have solutions for it. They are just not ready to do the necessary change to enable it. People are smart enough nowadays to realised it is not worth the effort to have a large family. Especially in Singapore where everything cost a lot and your pay are highly depressed. Fix the cause, make people have a comfortable life, and the symptoms, birthrate, will be solved.

Rightly said !

But which is harder ?

Changing myself to fit the world or making the environment change to fit in .

all talk cock no action leh. When they are studying the problem, they actually send alot of scholars to different European countries to study how they tackle these low birth rate issues

But they are not ready to implement the bold measures that these countries have - like job guarantee, working hours, generous maternity and paternity leaves, min. wage, etc. So, come up with "improved" package that simply do not work in our high-cost, low-pay environment. They keep talking of giving birth but its so bloody costly how? And we see pregnant mothers being laid off - who dare to get pregnant and become single-income family? In Singapore, its simply tough.

Then they decide to raise the population artifically by bringing in vast amount of foreigners hoping that they could sink roots here - this has caused a backlash in the society and obviously, the government has to come up to say they are now slowing this down.

So, until they are ready to face the reality, I think he will just have to keep talking and keep urging. And we will just keep turning a deaf ear.

So, whats next?

So, whats next?

Its PAP, Pay And Pay, I always joke with my friends that sooner or latter the government is going to introduce another fund. The "No Children Provident Fund" or NCPF for short, for every year the couple did not have children they will contribute money to it. Only when they have children can the funds be used. It will be progressive, meaning the more children you have the more you can take out up to an "approved" limit that is being reviewed every year. Most likely increased every year, so you end up unable to use the fund even if you have to. Think about it, the way PaPpies are going, why not just "Fine" couples that have no children. Makes sense given the other things they are doing.
