Tributes to bodybuilder Doug Brignole have flooded social media after news of his death was reported by figures close to the champion on Thursday (October 13).
Brignole’s sudden death has shocked the bodybuilding and fitness community after it was announced he had died unexpectedly at 62 years old.
Doug was a renowned figure in the world of competitive bodybuilding, with his career in the industry spanning more than four decades.
Following the news of his passing, fans and supporters, as well as those who competed alongside the champion, have reflected on his life and legacy.

Doug Brignole dies suddenly aged 62​

On Thursday, October 13, bodybuilding promoter Joe Wheatley announced in a Facebook post the veteran champion had passed away.
In the post, which tagged individuals from the bodybuilding and fitness community, Wheatley began: “This one hurts really bad! May he rest in peace. Doug Brignole – 62 years old.”
A cause of death has yet to be announced, with Wheatley explaining “no more details” were known at the time of his post. A statement has yet to be released by Doug’s family.
News of Doug Brignole’s passing comes almost two months before what would have been his 63rd birthday, on December 15.

Brignole was a veteran in the world of bodybuilding​

Having started competitive bodybuilding in 1976 at the age of 16, Doug Brignole’s career in the bodybuilding industry spanned more than four decades.
Brignole’s 40-plus years competing saw him earn many titles across many well-known competitions, including AAU’s Mr America and Mr Universe in 1986.
The veteran continued competing in events well into his 50s and, in 2019, earned another Mr Universe title 33 years after his win in his division in 1986.
Doug also branched out into fitness education and the study of biomechanics – the science behind how the living body moves. He also authored two books – Million Dollar Muscle: A Historical And Sociological Perspective Of The Fitness Industry, published in 2012, and The Physics of Resistance Exercise (2020).

Fans celebrate Doug Brignole’s life and legacy​

Fans and fellow bodybuilding figures have been celebrating Doug Brignole’s life and legacy online.
Former Mr Universe first runner-up and personal trainer Richard Baldwin shared a moving tribute on Facebook: “He was a good friend, and it saddens me we will no longer be able to catch a workout and dinner next time I’m in LA.”
Rob Harrop, who competed alongside Doug, shared a throwback snap of their first competition together as well as other photos of them over the years. His lengthy tribute began: “Rest in peace, Doug Brignole. You were an incredible bodybuilder person and friend.”
