There’s something about airplane food that just feels inherently wrong – like how it’s already cooked and pre-packaged and then reheated again.
Of course, this applies mainly to us Economy-flying folks who don’t know what it feels like to be served food on real ceramic plates like the high flyers in Business and First class.
Singapore Airlines, though, has long had a reputation for serving quality eats, even to its cheap seats. But a Reddit user recently posted two photos of some of the meals being served in Economy class on recent SQ flights and wondered if the airline had “downgraded” their qualty.

The user wrote, “I came across a discussion on a local forum where it was claimed that cakes, dessert and fresh fruits are replaced with a sad piece cracker biscuit and it’s now served on a cheap plastic disposable. If this is indeed the case, it is disappointing to know that other full-fledged airlines offer better in-flight experiences at a lower cost.”
From the pics they posted, and those from another post on Facebook, the meals do indeed look sort of sad. .

One redditor weighed in on the post to say that they looked like food from an army camp – only to be corrected by someone else who said that the food in airlines and army camps both comes from SATS, a catering company.
Others said that even 7-Eleven food looks better.

“New Serviceware Trial”

Singapore Airlines announced in February on a social media post that they were launching a new serviceware trial on Premium Economy and Economy.
“Made of Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper and finished with the distinctive SIA look, the unique design of the new serviceware allows it to retain heat and moisture better than the current casserole dish,” the post read.
“It also means we can now offer soupy and gravy-rich main courses, including long-time favourites such as laksa, mee siam, and congee on these routes. As a result, customers can look forward to tastier meals and a wider variety of options on these medium- and long-haul flights.”

From the video, the packaging looks similar to those used in the pics that are getting slammed. And the complaints about it seem endless, from the cutlery used to the food quality served.

With the current state of the economy, it seems like companies such as Singapore Airlines are trying to save a buck somewhere.
Then again, maybe it’s about the destination, not the journey.

Why keep giving money to a trashy GLC? Why continue to fund your oppressors? Do Sinkies still fly SIA because of some misguided patriotic pride, or is it because there are some perks involved? :o-o:

Economy class is poor class. Poor people eat poor people's food. What's so shocking about that?

the chicken with legumes and basil sauce topping is actually not bad. that’s the best meal i had all week considering the humble meals from cai png stalls in sg. this is understandable as majority of passengers (69%) on long haul sq flights transiting thru’ sg are cecas, and they mostly order vegan neh meals. the handful of non-ceca passengers are then usually given 2 choices: chicken or fish. beef is offered less as it offends the cecas swarming economy seats. ironic that since cecas are in the majority due to air india code share flights (i.e. start point is in india and final destination in angmoh cuntry either u.s. or uk or arsetralia) they get to eat first as their meals are treated as “special”. it should be other way around. the handful of non-ceca passengers should be served first with their special meals. cecas should be served last as they are now the new majority on sq flights. these cecas are fucking cheap. fill up entire cattle class cabins.

Non-ceca pax should fly at least premium economy. Let the Ah Nehs take over economy.

there shouldn’t even be economy seats for direct long haul flights in the first place. it should start with premium economy. economy seats are reintroduced in these direct trans-pacific routes i think mainly because of investments in air india and code share with air india where air india handles the domestic and feeder segments in india while sia handles all its international segments. sq now becums cattle airline to help with india to rest of (1st) world human trafficking. so many elderly grannies and great grannies getting out of india to sexploit welfare and medical benefits in liberal 1st world cuntries, thanks to tagging along their adult children with fake degrees and fraud jobs. half of sq 32 are on wheelchairs.

Food was not too bad in flight SQ711.
sq is one of very few airlines where one can walk up to the rear galley and ask for any kind of beverage from beer, wine and soda to hot coffee and tea and grab a few bites and snacks for makan from the big basket. i prefer this self service method than stupid entitled passengers constantly buzzing the attendants for service. walk down the aisle, stretch legs, take a leak at the lavatory, scan the other passengers for chio-ness (usually none) and seek out the drink and food.
