SINGAPORE'S workers continue to lead the pack when it comes to the number of hours they put in at work, according to a report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The report puts them at the top of 13 economies in the group's Global Wages Report for 2008-09, surpassing even the notoriously hardworking Japanese and Taiwanese.

The report showed data for 2007 and compared it with that of 2008 and the first quarter of last year, when the global recession was at its worst.

The ILO report did not specify the exact numbers but a check with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) put working hours here at 45.9 hours a week for 2008 and the first quarter of last year. In 2007, the figure was 46.3 hours.

Under the Employment Act, the limit on working hours is 44 hours a week or eight hours a day. Beyond this, workers are entitled to 1.5 times their hourly rate of pay.

The working hours do not include a tea break or lunchtime. This applies only to workmen earning less than $4,500, or other employees drawing less than $2,000 a month.

Employment Act - Conditions of Work

There are seven issues, which will be applicable only to you if your monthly income is less than $2,000 per month.

1. Working hours

Generally, you are not required to work more than 8 hours a day (or 44 hours a week). There are, however, exceptions to this general rule.

You can:

work for 9 hours in one day (but still not exceeding 44 hours a week), if you agree to work less than 8 hours a day on one or more days, or work 5 (or less) days a week.

work for 48 hours a week (or 88 hours over 2 weeks), if you agree to work less than 44 hours every alternative week.

work unlimited hours and on rest days, if there is an accident, or if the work is essential to the life of the community, defence or security, or if there is urgent work to be done to machinery or plant or an interruption of work which it was impossible to foresee.

If you work more than the hours above, you are working overtime.

With the exception of the above, you cannot be compelled to work on a rest day unless your work is required to be carried on continuously by a succession of shifts.

its to do with the mindset of the Sg bosses... more face time = more work done, in their mistaken belief. so everyone wayangs and stays till late.

ZERO efficiency

I thought someone said that there is no spur on the hide.

The report only mentioned 'Singapore workers', which include FTs, WP, pros, and shitizens.

If the old man and the report is true, then, from deduction, the hard working ones are all the former categories except the last one, while those without spurs in their hides are those in last category above.

This report is meant to rub salt into wound of shitizens caused by the old man.

long hours but no increment and OT, bosses very happy.

abt the MOM laws....can it really be trusted?

up to individual to believe.

SINkingporeanS no longer ride WILD HORSES, ( only Susan Boyle, sings it), that is why the old fart is grumbling that there is no spur in the hide...their spurs are entrenched in the wild prettty mares from PRC...:D
