'Unprecedented' fire at Australian oil refinery to affect nation's petrol supplies

A major fire at one of Australia's two oil refineries has been extinguished, but the damage has deepened fears over the nation's petrol supplies amid a global fuel crunch.
Emergency crews rushed to Viva's Corio oil refinery in Geelong, south-west of Melbourne, just before midnight local time (14:00 GMT) on Wednesday, after reports of explosions and flames.
The blaze was put out on Thursday after burning for 13 hours. No one was injured, with dozens of workers on site when it broke out evacuated safely.
The refinery - which produces 50% of Victoria's fuel and 10% of the nation's - is still partially operational but the government has warned of impacts to petrol production.

At least two people were killed and 11 others injured when a major fire broke out at a river port in Myanmar’s northwestern Sagaing region, local media reported on Tuesday.

The blaze erupted around evening on Monday at a port near a monastery in the Homalin township, quickly spreading across vessels and nearby vehicles, according to local outlet Mizzima.

Witnesses said at least 22 motorized boats and two vehicles were destroyed as flames engulfed the area.

Authorities and emergency responders rushed to the scene, deploying multiple fire engines along with local firefighting units.

However, residents reported that the fire continued burning into the following morning.

Preliminary accounts suggest the fire may have been triggered while fuel was being loaded, with large quantities of fuel stored on the boats intensifying the blaze and causing explosions.

Some of the China-flagged oil tankers are not carrying oil, but something else.

I expect naval action in the Straits of Malacca and South China Sea in the not-too-distant future.

Additional info:

Venezuela, who has the largest oil reserve in the world, is now under US control.

The Hormuz strait blockade really is a boost for the US petroleum industry. However, the increase in petroleum prices will hurt everyone in the world (including ordinary Americans).

USA, despite being the biggest producer of petroleum, is still a net importer of it.

USA petroleum producers needs oil prices to be high (~$100/barrel) since American crude oil is expensive to refine. Saudi crude, in contrast, is the cheapest to refine and produce. A disabled Saudi petroleum industry is good for USA's petrol companies

MOSCOW, April 21 (Reuters) - Russia's Tuapse oil refinery, which sells most of its products for export, halted operations following a Ukrainian drone attack on April ‌16, two industry sources said on Tuesday.
Ukraine has increased attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure as the U.S., which had brokered peace talks to stop the conflict with Russia, has shifted its focus on the war in Iran. The U.S. has also eased some sanctions on Russian oil to help reduce the impact of supply disruption in the Gulf.

The US needs to become the dominant global petroleum producer in order to preserve the petrodollar system.

The secondary objective is to strangle China's petroleum import sources.

By the way, the biggest casualties in this US-Iran war are non oil producing Asian countries like India, Japan, south Korea, Philippines and sinkapore (and Taiwan province)

A Saturday fire that shut down a reformer unit at Chevron's 125,000 b/d Pasadena, Texas, refinery has been extinguished, according to a company spokesman and regulatory filing.

Ross Allen, a Chevron spokesman, said in a Monday statement that the company continues to supply customers in the region following the incident.

The refinery experienced a leak and fire in a process unit that was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported, he added.

A filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Sunday identified a reformer as the process unit, which was shut down after the fire. The emissions event lasted for just over one hour, the filing showed.

The Pasadena refinery, located about 10 miles southeast of downtown Houston, has an estimated 24,000 b/d of catalytic reforming capacity, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The refinery produces gasoline, gasoline components, diesel, fuel gas and liquefied petroleum gas, among others, and the facility processes only sweet, light crude that Chevron produces from the Permian Basin, the company's website shows.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — An explosion at a Texas natural gas or oil well site set off a large fire that was seen for miles and led to some evacuations, but caused no injuries, authorities said Tuesday.

The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls late Monday of a loud explosion in Etoile in eastern Texas, a small, rural community about 140 miles northeast of Houston.

The sheriff’s office said the explosion happened at an oil well site. The city of Nacogdoches, about 20 miles away, described it as a natural gas well, based on information it received from the Texas Department of Public Safety, city spokesperson Kevin Meyer said Tuesday.

Residents were advised to evacuate as a precaution and others were asked to shelter in place. It wasn’t immediately known how many residents were affected.

The fire was still burning early Tuesday, but it was not spreading and was being monitored, Meyer said.

"There is currently no danger to local residents from the fire, and air quality in the area is being monitored as well," Meyer said in a news release.

A well control emergency response company from Houston was on its way to further suppress the fire, Meyer said.

Our Jurong island safe or not?
Our Zoolong island and Bukom are going to eat grass liao. Our refineries are set up to process Saudi "sweet" crude oil. American crude is too acidic for our refineries

Are we targets? For sure. There is a global oil war going on now

Listen
MOSCOW, April 21 - Russia is set to stop oil exports from Kazakhstan to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline starting from May 1, three industry sources said on Tuesday.

The sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said that an adjusted oil exporting schedule has been sent to Kazakhstan and Germany.

A halt to Kazakh flows would add more uncertainty to Germany's fuel supply as the Iran war disrupts energy shipments from the Middle East only a few years after Berlin's decades-long energy ties with Russia were upended by the war in Ukraine.
