S'pore woman shocked by S$1,516 phone bill after reportedly using 222GB in 1 month, she says not possible

A woman in Singapore has pushed back against a S$1,500 bill from the telco M1, after being charged for 222GB of local mobile data usage — more than double her plan's monthly bundle.
Cost over S$1,500
Speaking to
Shin Min Daily News, an M1 customer Anna Huang (transliteration) said she received a text message from her telco on Feb. 16, notifying her of additional charges totalling S$795.91, along with a request to contact the telco to avoid service disruption.
When she called M1's customer service hotline, a representative confirmed the charges but declined to provide a breakdown of her data usage, citing that the bill had yet to be generated.
Huang subsequently turned off data roaming on her device.
Her monthly plan, priced at S$25.42, includes 30GB of data, 100 local call minutes, and 100 SMS per month.
She also had an additional 70GB of data, 900 minutes, and 900 text messages — bringing her total data allowance to 100GB.
When she reviewed her February bill in early March 2026, she discovered she had exceeded her local data limit by 122GB, and her total bill came up to S$1,516.13.
"I was studying at home during that period, and I don't watch shows, play games, or stream videos on my phone. How could I have used that much data?" Huang said.
She called the M1 customer service again, during which her phone settings were checked, and no anomalies were found.
M1 reportedly offered to waive 75 per cent of the additional charges as a goodwill gesture, but Huang declined, maintaining that she had not utilised the data in question.
M1's response
In response, a spokesperson for M1 told
Shin Min that records showed Huang had used 41.99GB of data on Feb. 6 alone.
The telco said it sent both text and in-app notifications on Feb. 7, alerting her that she had 1GB remaining, followed by a second alert the same day when her allowance dropped to 200MB.
As her usage continued to climb, M1 tried to call her twice on Feb. 16, and also sent a text message requesting she get in touch.
Huang called back that morning and was again informed of the outstanding charges.
According to M1, Huang used a further 25.96GB of local mobile data between the evening of Feb. 16 and Feb. 28.
The spokesperson said the telco extended a one-time partial waiver out of goodwill and because she was a longtime customer, an offer the customer declined.
