Singapore government got conned again. After agreeing to help the Jamaican government pay US$550,000 (approx S$748k) for resurfacing of a stadium track in exchange for the presence of Usain Bolt to help promote Spore YOG, it is now all in vain as Bolt announces that he will not be coming.

Swim sensation Phelps and lightning Bolt will miss Youth Olympics

SINGAPORE - Two of sport's biggest names will not be in Singapore for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) told MediaCorp on Friday that swimming superstar Michael Phelps and track phenomenon Usain Bolt (picture) are unable to attend the Games.

Along with Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, the pair were appointed Games' ambassadors by the IOC for more than 3,600 young athletes from the 205 National Olympic Committees that will compete in Singapore from Aug 14 to 26.

"We just heard from Michael and Usain, and they will not be able to join us in Singapore because of their competition schedules," IOC media relations co-ordinator Nimtaz-Tanya Noordin said.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 04, 2009; KINGSTON, Jamaica – Singapore, the host nation for next year's inaugural Youth Olympics, has given the Jamaican government its assurance to pay the US$550,000.00 needed to resurface the run-down Stadium East mondo track at the Independence Park Complex, according to the Jamaica Observer newspaper.

What financial disaster? It has bloated from S$120m to S$390m. If only Singapore industry can match that growth.

We should pay close attention to auditor general's report on discrepencies in the contract awards. Heard some rumours of MIW related companies benifitng significantly from YOG and even IR contracts. We are not talking GLCs here but rather the kind of crony capitalism that was prevalent in the twilight Marcos and Suharto years.

In the old days. CPIB would be all over these rumours. These days, CPIB has become a toothless tiger who has declined to even investigate the very well documented bribery case by ST Kinetics.

Talking about crony capitalism, have you noticed how disturbingly similar the MM Lee is starting to resemble Marcos and Suharto. Both had a golden period where they contributed significantly to the development of their countries. Eventually however corruption and nepotism set in and they destroyed their countries. The recent failures of the past year seem to be a harbinger of even more serious problems that are going to affect Singapore.

Non appearance of Bolt means the Jamaican goverment did not accept Singapore government Interim Upgrading of their Stadium.

Not bad if the pay slip can match the YOG budget grow.

Charity begins abroad. :D:rolleyes: Soon Singapore will donate $30 million to North Korea because their people are starving.
