S'pore Grab driver puts sign saying he only speaks Chinese to Chinese people, no English
The passengers found the sign offensive.
A couple were left stunned during a Grab ride after spotting a sign stating that the driver "did not speak English with Chinese people" and would only speak Chinese.
The woman, Alicia, later took to TikTok, saying she posted about it because she could hardly believe what she was seeing.
Alicia told Mothership she had initially greeted the driver in English, but was met with an “uncle grunt”.
She then sat down and noticed the sign, which she said she had to read thrice because she was in disbelief.
@aliciatadah Slightly offended on behalf of all mixed-chinese kids / Chinese friends that can’t read or speak mandarin Is this inner race discrimination??? Also what happened to all Singaporeans conversing in basic English so we have racial harmony #tiktoksg ♬ original sound - Ally

Husband did not read Mandarin well
The situation was made worse by the fact that her husband was not very proficient in Mandarin, Alicia said.He was quite taken aback, she added.
He had left Singapore to study overseas at around 13, and it had been more difficult for him to learn the language in the first place due to his dyslexia, she explained.
He is also not from a Chinese-speaking household, as he is Peranakan and his mother spoke Malay and Hokkien.
Alicia pointed out that Chinese encompasses much more than just Mandarin, including "all the different dialects that our ancestors brought over".
One language shouldn't take prominence over others
Alicia said that with so many races living in Singapore, no single language should take prominence over another. She added: "I'm not saying learn English only. I'm saying that English is the only language that is uniting us now, and if all of us only spoke Mandarin, which is not the case for all other races, that's an erosion of our Singaporean identity. Because we are not Singaporean if we only spoke our own racial languages, right?"
Reported to Grab, driver suspended
Alicia said she found the sign "offensive" and reported the incident to Grab.Grab has since responded to her report and commented on her video.
In their comment, they said that this behaviour does not reflect the "inclusive environment" they strive to provide, and added that they would follow up on her report.
In response to Mothership's queries, a Grab spokesperson said they maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination of any kind.
Consequently, they have suspended the driver involved.
He is required to remove the signage and undergo a mandatory coaching session to ensure alignment with Grab's code of conduct before being considered for reinstatement.
"We would like to remind everyone in our ecosystem of our shared responsibility to maintain a respectful and inclusive environment for all," they added.
