Public Service contributed to turnaround in Singapore's economy: DPM Teo
Minister in Charge of Civil Service Teo Chee Hean has paid tribute to public service officers, citing their hard work in contributing to the turnaround in Singapore's economy.
Speaking at the Public Service Awards ceremony on Friday, Mr Teo, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, said the Singapore Public Service took on the challenges and difficulties in 2009 with "great resolve" and "fortitude". He said that working together with the country's political leadership, a collective effort was made to find practical solutions to the challenges.
Singapore's economy has registered an impressive 15.5 per cent growth in the first quarter of this year, and is projected to grow by 7 per cent to 9 per cent for 2010.
Mr Teo said; "This ability to work as one networked government is one of the reasons why the Singapore Public Service is effective and distinctive compared to many other public services in the world. We must remain committed to serving and engaging our citizens as best as we can.
"To do so, we need public officers who are willing to go the extra mile, and public sector organisations that will constantly seek new ways to improve and innovate, and to create greater value for the public."
At the ceremony on Friday evening, 303 awards were were given to officers and agencies in recognition of their service and organisational excellence.
Five members of the public who had made significant contributions as customers were also honoured.
The ceremony also saw Mr Teo launching a the book "Pioneers Once More: The Singapore Public Service 1959-2009", which celebrates the achievements and challenges faced by public officers in shaping the country's development.
