JAPAN'S Sony and South Korean rival Samsung are dissolving their joint venture in liquid crystal display panels as Sony tries to stanch years of losses in its TV business.

Samsung Electronics Co. will buy all of Sony's shares in the joint venture for about 1.08 trillion Korean won ($935 million) subject to a final agreement, Sony Corp. said Monday.

The joint venture called S-LCD was set up in 2004. Sony, which fell behind in flat panel TVs, invested in a Samsung panel factory to ensure a steady supply of panels for its LCD TVs.

Sony's TV operation has lost money for seven straight years and the company is straining to return that key business to profit.

The prices of TVs as well as panels have been dropping so it makes more sense to buy panels at the market rate than to invest in production.

Sony, which makes Bravia TV sets, does not make its own LCD panels.

It said it will enter a new partnership with Samsung to buy panels, and will also continue buying panels from other manufacturers.

Sony said it will suffer a loss of 66 billion yen ($846 million) for the third quarter of this fiscal year, which ends later this month, because of the declining value of investment in S-LCD.

Getting out the production venture will produce substantial savings after January 2012, when the deal is completed, according to Sony.

It was still unclear how Sony's profit forecast for the fiscal year through March 2012 will be affected, said company spokesman Takashi Uehara.

Korea brands like Samsung & LG are very quite cheap in cost for their products else Sony is over prices......

I used to buy Sony TVs because i thought they are better (for CRT)

however, they were slow in coming out with LCD / LED TVs, playing catch up with Samsung.

At the moment, I am afraid, Samsung has cornered the TV markets- due in part to their marketing / advertising & innovative designs - I still remember one model is like a wine glass.

Other brands such as Philips /Sony / LG are making up the numbers. Not to mention an array of Chinese brands.

But like all products made in PRC, you dun expect them to last very long.

The staff of Samsung is not cheap, unlike Japanese, the Korean corporations like Samsung invest in their people providing lodging for staff & education subsidy & sponsorship for staff's children. The reason why they are able to sustain with such low price is the production volume, economies of scale which Japanese today have no idea of, the second thing is in their R&D, Korean R&D team are more cost conscious & are willing to try out new raw material which are cheaper & better, unlike Japanese who only know how to stick to the traditional source of raw material supply regardless of cost as it is proven "good" & it saves them the red tapes of proposing something new every year!
There's Samsung Village in Korea & one in Malaysia where all their production are concentrated! Unlike Japanese, the Koreans unless satisfied with the QC of the items they produced especially in China will not want to take the risks because they do very much want to take over the international automobile, electricals & electronics market from the Japanese which today has been going down the drain with their bad QC as most of it come from China!

Apple iPhone, iPad batteries to last 'days or even weeks'

Sometime in the future, Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and MacBook might work longer than ever on a smaller and lighter battery pack.

How is this possible? By using hydrogen fuel cells, which convert oxygen and hydrogen into water, heat and electricity.

The US Patent & Trademark Office has recently published two Apple patent applications, detailing how fuel cells might power smartphones, laptops and tablets of the future.

Hydrogen fuel cells aren't exactly a new technology; they've been used to power Honda cars, for example, and they bring their own set of problems, especially in the context of smartphones or laptops. "It is extremely challenging to design hydrogen fuel cell systems which are sufficiently portable and cost-effective to be used with portable electronic devices," admits Apple.

But Apple might have a solution. One of the patent applications describes a "fuel cell system which is capable of both providing power to and receiving power from a rechargeable battery in a portable computing device. This eliminates the need for a bulky and heavy battery within the fuel cell system, which can significantly reduce the size, weight and cost of the fuel cell system."

And for how long these fuel cells (in its patent application, Apple explores other fuel possibilities besides hydrogen) could power a smartphone or a laptop? The answer is "days or even weeks without refueling," according to Apple. This sounds like a dream to owners of most modern smartphones, which barely last a day of heavy use.

We'll probably have to wait a while until fuel cell-powered iPhones and MacBooks hit the market, but a big breakthrough in battery technology is something we've been waiting for a long time, and it might change the face of the market forever.

samsung might set the new batt system in another way so as not to break the patent law and might even created its own patent for that.

no way Apple can expect to have chasity belt around their battery.

I give the Chinks a month before they copied it and 2 before Samsung launch their version.

Both Samsung and Sony are more than just LCD displays.

Samsung is in the memory chip business.

Sony is in the gaming business.

Both also sell many other types of peripherals.

Anyway, LCD displays are going the way of the dinosaur. LED displays will soon have an ubiquitous presence.

It was like back when LCD displays first appeared on the market. They were expensive and had poor refresh rates. Gradually, things improved and they began to replace CRT monitors and bulky 'Trinitron' TV sets.

Same as floppy drives, dial-up internet and CD-ROM drives.

This is the evolution of technology.

this i agree but i referring to the wages of the staff. the wages remains stagnant for long, the money still not in your pocket.

I have lost counts of the number of TV brands that vanished in the past years. Must be a hundred of them. Where are Telefunken Gratz RCA JVC Zenith Grundic Russell etc

Many have speculated that the golden era of Apple died with Steve Jobs.

With the iPhone, iPad, Mac OS, Apple still has a strong product line. Then there is the rumoured upcoming Apple TV. As we have already seen that the industry needs someone like Apple to show the way. For years when Microsoft, Nokia,.... dominated, the industry stagnated. Samsung with all it's manufacturing prowess still has to rely on the android & Apple for their design :)

If what you say is true, then it's a prediction for the whole industry & not only just a prediction for Apple.

I neber like Samsung tv...find em too bight n color unnatural...prefer sharp which gib a more gentle n natural color...price wise quite reasonable...but seems like oso dying leow...haizz

Making me laugh fuel cell battery for portable device. It will not be available in 10 year.
How going to refuel? At home have hydrogen tank to pump the gas? How heavy will be the device to convert gas to electricity? Will it leak?

I think Samsung increasing monopoly of the TV industry is a result of mass production n lower price rather than quality. They other attraction is the superior design i guess. It is also true of their mobile sets n cars.

And reviews of Korean products often put them in super good scale as compare to others..which i feel abit perplexing. As a user of many of the products,it is reasonably good but not as superb as what all the reviews conclude.

In fact the Taiwanese brands have much better quality but are always not featured eg HTC.

When I was looking at handphones I noticed that Samsung modelsl got alot of coverage as compared to other brands. Got me wondering if this was because Samsung advertised heavily compared to other brands:confused:

Very funny. SONY buy panel from others, they should close the TV department. From the leader in TV maker to begging others to sell panel.
Buying from others sure higher price and quality hard to control plus no improvement .

Samsung products suck big time. My washing machine leaked at the back and buttons sunk in. Fridge thermostat spoilt, door cannot close properly and technician say must change the whole door because rubber lining sealed to the door. LCD TV got burnt marks behind the screen. HDD spoil after just 1 drop even on carpets. Look better than Jap products on the outside but tecnology and QC cannot make it. So what if its cheap?

Samsung LCD/LED TVs 'look better' because they are just brighter at the default settings. Go watch a football match on Samsung TV and you can see that the lines on the field are shaking and never straight - major flaw! All LED/LCDs TV have a this common problem with displaying different shades of black color and I don't see Samsung doing any better. Panasonic LED TVs are the best.

Sony cameras are becoming a major player now though.
