Discussions by political leaders in Petaling Jaya are being closely watched amid expectations of a political realignment in Putrajaya today.
PETALING JAYA: Some ministers have cleared their official schedules for the coming week, while others have tidied up their desks in their respective ministries in anticipation of a major Cabinet reshuffle, as rumours swirl of a political realignment which will see friends and foes forming a new ruling coalition.
Sources who have been in touch with FMT on the latest developments in Petaling Jaya – where PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali are attending separate meetings with their party leaders – are also not ruling out a major announcement late today.
Another source told FMT there are plans by Mahathir to seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to inform him of the new political composition in the government.
FMT cannot independently verify the claim, but is checking with palace officials.

This morning, Azmin and some nine PKR leaders and MPs aligned to him arrived at the Petaling Jaya Sheraton hotel. Separately, PPBM top leaders met at the party’s headquarters at Yayasan Selangor, just a few minutes away.
It is understood that the PPBM leaders including Mahathir would later join Azmin and others at the Sheraton for an “important announcement”.

The Petaling Jaya Sheraton hotel where PPBM leaders led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad are expected to join Azmin Ali for an ‘important announcement’ later today.
“That’s where it all started, and probably where it will end,” quipped the source.
There is strict security at the entrance of the hotel, where Pakatan Harapan leaders had holed up in the early hours of May 10 two years ago following their general election victory.
The announcement could effectively see DAP losing its federal power, with Malay-based parties playing a dominant role under a new coalition.
But any change at the federal level will have repercussions at the state level.

The federal PH coalition comprising PPBM, PKR, DAP and Amanah is currently reflected in all state governments, except in Perlis, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah, where PH parties PPBM and DAP are partners in a coalition government led by Warisan.
A source said the need to “adjust” these state governments is on the agenda in today’s meetings.
The same source said discussions are underway to retain power in states where PH has been ruling with a slim majority.
FMT’s attempts for a response from DAP leaders have failed with repeated calls not answered.
Tension has been building in Pakatan Harapan, as PKR, DAP and Amanah leaders stepped up pressure on Mahathir to fix a date for handing over power to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Today’s development comes less than 48 hours after a midnight press conference on Friday, in which a visibly stern Mahathir declared that he was still in charge, and that PH partners had given him the trust to remain as prime minister for as long as he wanted.
Last month, FMT reported that private meetings between Mahathir and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang might foreshadow the realignment of political power in Putrajaya, a move that might sideline DAP, and more specifically, thwart Anwar’s prime ministerial ambitions.
The new alignment would bring together forces aligned to Mahathir with the clout that PAS holds in the northern Malay heartland.
Earlier this month, Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam raised the possibility of a new coalition called “Pakatan Nasional” taking shape.
PH was formed in 2015 by PKR, DAP and Amanah following the break-up of Pakatan Rakyat, which previously united then opposition parties PAS, PKR and DAP.
In 2016, the coalition got its fourth partner, PPBM, formed by Mahathir after a split in Umno. The grouping proved effective in mobilising public support in the wake of public disenchantment with the Najib administration over the 1MDB scandal, culminating in the historic defeat of Barisan Nasional in the 2018 elections.

Mujahid appeals for calm, says focus on people and not 'desperate agenda'
7.40pm
: Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa appeals for calm amid indications that the Pakatan Harapan government is on the brink of collapse.

He reminds all quarters that the Harapan presidential council's decision on the transition issue was clear.

Without mentioning names, Mujahid (photo) tweets, “Those dissatisfied are taking advantage as if forgetting the people's mandate. All should remain calm and keep the focus on the agenda for the people not an agenda of desperation.”
In earlier tweets, the minister, who oversees Islamic affairs, says “desperate people do desperate things.”
“To us, they are like clouds, when they are not in the way, a beautiful day with sunshine will appear. Make sure desperate people do not get in our way. Stay strong with Pakatan Harapan!
“Move on lah... Is the back door government gang trying to save the country or themselves? I am confident Tun M (Mahathir) and Harapan leaders will respect the (earlier decision),” he adds.
Warisan and GPS, where do they stand?
7.30pm:
If a change of government happens tonight, it would have been made possible in part due to support from Warisan and GPS.
Previously there were conflicting reports about who commanded majority support in Parliament.
However, top PKR sources indicate that Anwar had banked on GPS and Warisan to support him instead of Mahathir.
This was despite both sides keeping their cards close to their chest.
"Especial GPS. They're going to have state elections this year and they had the upper hand, why would they join Mahathir?" a source says.
Mahathir has also ruffled feathers in Sabah by setting up a Bersatu chapter there despite initial objections from Chief Minister Shafie Apdal.
It is unclear what motivated them to throw their support behind Mahathir.
GPS has 18 parliament seats, and Warisan 9.
Without them, a coalition of Bersatu, Umno, PAS and 10 PKR defectors would only have 92 seats, short of the 112 needed to form the government.
Annuar Musa and Takiyuddin Hassan arrive
7.25pm: Sheraton Hotel, Petaling Jaya
- The secretaries-general for both Umno and PAS have just arrived at the hotel.
Annuar Musa and Takiyuddin Hassan are seen entering the holding room for all the VIPs, accompanied by Bersatu’s Malacca exco Rafiq Naizamohideen.
When asked why he was here, Annuar says he was here to “meet his MP colleagues”.
PAS deputy president and PAS Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh arrive shortly after the two secretaries-general.
Bersatu, Umno, Azmin's PKR, GPS, Warisan and PAS at palace
7.11pm: Istana Negara
- A source close to the palace confirmed to Malaysiakini that the six parties at the palace now comprise Bersatu, Umno, PKR (Azmin's faction), GPS, Warisan and PAS.
The leaders present are as follow:
Muhyiddin Yassin (Bersatu president)
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Umno president)
Azmin Ali (PKR deputy president)
Abang Johari Openg (GPS president)
Shafie Apdal (Warisan president)
Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS president)
The source also claimed that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is present but an aide to the latter denied this.
Umno leaders arrive at Sheraton Hotel
7.05pm: Sheraton Hotel, Petaling Jaya
- A number of Umno leaders have been spotted arriving here.
Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri (below) as well as other supreme council leaders such as Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim and Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said.

Umno lawmakers also present are Maran MP Ismail Muttalib, Paya Besar MP Mohd Shahar Abdullah and Kuala Kangsar MP Mastura Mohd Yazid. Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Md Noor is also here.
Meanwhile, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s aide Fadzlette Othman Merican is spotted and Bersatu’s Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed has also just arrived.
All of them have been tight-lipped about their purpose in coming to the hotel.
PMO: No press conference by PM
7pm
: A Prime Minister's Office spokesperson says that there will be no press conference by Dr Mahathir Mohamad tonight.
This comes in a PMO media Whatsapp group, in response to journalists request for confirmation if there will be a media conference or major announcement by the prime minister expected later today.

The spokesperson also says that Mahathir would not be at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya, where he is speculated to hold a press conference purportedly on a major political development.
Despite this, a stream of BN and PAS leaders are arriving here.
Dr M, representatives from six parties at palace - source
7pm: Istana Negara
- A source close to the palace informs Malaysiakini that leaders from six parties have now arrived.
However, the source did not name the parties. Mahathir has also arrived.
To date, Malaysiakini can confirm that GPS and Umno leaders are heading to the palace.
The other groups involved in discussions earlier today include PKR MPs aligned to Azmin Ali, Bersatu and Warisan.
PAS was at a scheduled retreat with Umno in Janda Baik.
PAS taking 'wait and see' approach, says veep
6.40pm
- While there is confirmation that Umno and GPS top guns are headed to the national palace, there is no word on whether PAS is involved.

PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah (above) says his party is taking a "wait and see" approach.
"I'm in Kuala Lumpur but there isn't a PAS meeting... It is a matter for Harapan and the prime minister," he says.
6.35pm: Sheraton Hotel Petaling Jaya - Supporters have congregated on the floor where PKR supporters aligned to Azmin Ali had gathered.
They are mostly lounging around the hotel floor as nothing of note is currently happening.
Earlier today around 9am, PKR leaders such as Zuraida Kamaruddin, Kamaruddin Jaafar, Saifuddin Abdullah and Rashid Hasnon had gathered here.
Along with them were a number of PKR MPs, such as Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, Nibong Tebal MP Mansor Othman. Segamat MP Edmund Santhara Kumar’s car was also spotted at the hotel lobby earlier.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to give a press conference here later today.
Umno president confirmed heading to Istana Negara
6.30pm: Istana Negara
- Malaysiakini can now confirm that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (photo) is heading to Istana Negara.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday (Feb 23) said he has been betrayed by partners in Pakatan Harapan (PH).
This came amid growing speculation that a new ruling coalition will be formed comprising Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and others.
In a Facebook Live broadcast of a prayer session at his residence, Mr Anwar said that while no official announcement will be made on Sunday, he was informed that the treachery was committed.
He admitted there are attempts to break up PH so that a new government can be formed.
“It involves our former friends from Bersatu and a small group from PKR who has betrayed us.”
“They have met Agong this evening, but no announcement has been made,” he said.
Earlier, at the start of the event, he expressed shock at the development, which he said was a betrayal because promise was made.
“It seems that there is going to be a change, possibly happening soonest. Maybe tomorrow. Although there is no announcement tonight but from the information I have received there is indeed such efforts.”

Meanwhile, an aide to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said that there would be “no announcement” on Sunday.
“No announcement. No press conference tonight,” the aide was quoted as saying by Malay Mail, in response to queries about political party leaders calling on the king earlier in the evening.
On Sunday night, there was a gathering between members of parliament from both sides of the political divide, including Bersatu, UMNO, PAS and a PKR splinter faction led by Mr Azmin Ali, at Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya
Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Parti Warisan Sabah and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) were also present.
Senior political figures including Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, Mr Azmin, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MCA president Wee Ka Siong.

More than 130 lawmakers were reportedly at the hotel, according to the Star. There are 222 seats in the parliament.
According to Malaysian media reports, top leaders of six parties had met the king at the Istana Negara earlier on Sunday evening.
The meeting came on the back of the PH Presidential Council meeting on Friday night when Dr Mahathir said "no date" had been fixed for the leadership transition to his successor, Mr Anwar, an agreement among the PH parties when they teamed up to win the May 2018 polls.

Anwar was planning to see the King on Monday to demand being PM as he will claim to have majority support amidst pulling a lie that he supports Mahathir just 3 days before.

Now Mahathir has called his bluff and swiftly showed who is Boss.

You cannot trust someone who plays backsides.
