The Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng division in Jalan Besar GRC is continuing to provide opportunities for the elderly and the needy there who face difficulties in finding employment, through a project.

The Chinatown Social Enterprise is a project that provides training for those who need jobs to specialise in craftsmanship. Their final products would subsequently be put up for sale.

MP for Jalan Besar GRC Lily Neo said the Chinatown Social Enterprise would be launched by Law Minister K Shanmugam when he visits the division on October 24.

Dr Neo said the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng ward had the largest number of rental homes - nearly 4,500 - and half of its residents were 50 years and older.
Currently, 30 residents are taking part in the programme where they are paid S$5 an hour for their work.

The youngest beneficiary of the Chinatown Social Enterprise programme is 30 years old.

Meanwhile, Dr Neo said she continued to see hardship cases during Meet-the-People sessions.

She said some residents faced difficulty making ends meet, adding some had asked for milk powder funding.
"... and some would just say 'can I have some money to sustain me for the next week?'.

"It sounds strange in Singapore (but) yes, I am (seeing) these problems here," Dr Neo said.

The Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng division also has a meal and grocery programme, which started in September 2007. The aim of the programme was to ensure the elderly and needy don't go without food.

For this, the division has engaged the support of community partners of nearly 200 hawkers, sundry shops and supermarkets in the area.

Vouchers in denominations of S$2 are redeemable at neighbourhood stalls taking part in the scheme.

So far, S$223,638 worth of vouchers have been distributed each month, to some 200 needy residents.

PAP is in denial. Why don't they just be frank? The majority of Singaporeans are living from hand to mouth. Some of them even have less than 3 meals a day. Bastard PAP.
