it is a total different thing to massacre thousands of helpless and unarmed people in a short period.
short or long period Singapore has never been condemned

a war doesn't happen out of a sudden. there will be clear signs that a war is about to break out. at that stage, the majority of the FT would have get out of Singapore already. the Malaysians who haven't left Singapore will be rounded up and placed in prison camps. China apparently has 1 million citizens in Singapore. if the signs are clear that the war is certain to happen. China will send sea and air transports accompanied by military power to evacuate their 1 million citizens, and they would demand that Singapore and Malaysia to hold back their military operations until the evacuation is complete. don't think Singapore nor Malaysia will dare to start the war when the Chinese evacuation is ongoing. evacuate 1 million people ? how long would it take ?
even if it is just a limited scale battle like some air or sea battles or artillery strikes over the causeway. the region is still considered a war zone now. bet the vast majority of FT will still get out of Singapore.
R u nuts? Combations evacuating their nationals before battle can start ?? Where got such thing??countries fight and they may advice their nationals to vamoosh or stay at their own risks. The most they evacuate their embassy staff and other VIPs. The rest r on their own!!
Singapore is the only country in this region to have a successful and viable military conscription system. We do outnumber Indonesia and Malaysia. Can Malaysia or Indonesia field a combined invasion force of over 300,000 men? If they can't, we outnumber them and outgun them too, given our prudent investment in military spending.
at that stage before the war, the majority of Malaysian citizens would have get out of Singapore already. Malaysia should have already told their citizens to get out of Singapore asap and the government will not be held responsible for the safety of those who choose to remain in Singapore albeit the very serious deteriorating situation. most likely that there would only be thousands, not hundreds of thousands prior to the rounding up of them in Singapore. with fewer than expected prisoners, we have much less bargaining chips for starters.
Singapore can threaten Malaysia with the lives of their citizens but Singapore can't really kill them in some sort of massacre, under most situations. if Singapore did that, we would face strong international condemnation for mass killing the helpless and unarmed prisoners. killing them albeit large-scale would drive the world public opinion against Singapore's cause, and we would find it very difficult to get the international material aid and strong moral support in the existing situation. don't think Singapore can afford to lose the war of world public opinion in the war.
The minute that the malaysians advice their citizens to get out is the same time you close the border and start rounding them up. As well, u freeze their bank accounts and seize their properties and assets. Their citizens can be released when they stand down their military and a UN Peacekeeping force arrives. If they shoot first, their hostage citizen dies. By shooting first, they are the aggressors. I don't care whether the world thinks its morally reprehensible to massacre hostages or not. I don;t care if public opinion is against singapore. Because if u lose the war, all the public opinion in the world may be in your favour, but it wouldn't bring your country back.

Singapore's military doctrine is aimed primarily at our two largest neighbours, who are both our greatest friends and greatest potential threats. We aim to outnumber and outgun them, and taking a leaf from the Israeli doctrine, bring the fight to them instead of fighting at our borders. It's a huge step forward, as compared to our doctrine of the past of holding out for about a week, while begging US and UN to send military aid.
In this dog-eat-dog world, there are no permanent friends, only permanent interests. Always remember Henry Kissinger's advice before you keep yapping about cutting our military budget or reducing NS.
