The latest SMRT meltdown is symptomatic of a deeper institutional defect in our system.

A public utility company that is government-linked and substantively supported with public funds, land and resources, whose core purpose is to provide an essential, public good. But regularly fails to do so on a satisfactory level, despite regular fare increases, most recently on a catastrophic level.

A public utility provider that is supposed to focus its funds, resources and energy on the overriding purpose of providing the public good. But instead chooses to deviate by bidding to be an operator in the completely unrelated wireless telecommunications sector.

A CEO who is: (a) chosen from a singular, myopic and premature talent selection process; (b) fast-tracked through a scholar/military/civil service merry-go-round career; (c) parachuted into a high-ranking government or government-linked position in a particular sector, even though he has no direct prior experience in such sector; and (d) paid an exorbitant salary for his services, even though he has no direct prior experience in providing such services.

A Minister whose background similarly satisfies factors (a) to (d) above and who is supposed to supervise such CEO. But offers innumerable and perfunctory permutations of the word "concern" when responding to lapses, whether minor or severe, of such public utility provider.

And the usual assortment of ruling party apologists and sycophants. Who dismissively tell us to have perspective as this is nothing close to a catastrophe (as compared to, of course, drought, famine and Armageddon). Who misdirect us to other irrelevant problems in neighboring countries.

Who encourage us to pull together as a nation, not comprehending that this is a man-made fiasco, not some natural disaster. Who tell us not to point fingers, not realizing how rich such a comment is considering they routinely fall over themselves pointing fingers at other man-made fiascos in opposition wards.

No amount of ministerial pay rise can prevent this.

I don't quite understand why we often have to compare ourselves against the worst in the world, like its some kind of self-comforting, bogeyman security blanket. Don't like our financial and economic policies? Look at Greece. Don't like our very strict laws? Look at crime-infested parts of the U.S.. We should be comparing ourselves against the best and aspiring to be at their level, not against the worst and simply being grateful we're not down there. And on this note, I don't believe it's a choice between one extreme or the other (e.g. either we have very strict laws or we become an anarchic society). I believe there is room for moderation where we can become a freer and more open society without degenerating into crazed lawlessness.

I believe respect means we give credit where it's due but criticize where it's necessary. Respect is not blind loyalty, lauding the successes but excusing the mistakes. It's not like supporting a football club.

That's the trigger to induce Sinkies into the 'count your blessings and be grateful' mode. The subtext is of course that the PAP govt has done a brilliant job, and is thus worthy of your whole-hearted support.

When you can't use facts, you resort to emotional appeal. That's what the PAP IBs often do. ;)

Singkie will always be Singkie. They are highly schooled but interestingly shallow and tunneled vision. You can talk to them but at the end of the day they will go back to their own vomit and claim their vomit is delicacy. Such is a average Singaporea. Surprising gullible and naive. Easy to control and tame

Singkie deserve PAP. One like to be screwed and the other love to screw.

Your post reminded me of this fool who used to condemn lky during coffee shop sessions . However, he ended up queuing overnight to see a wooden box. After that he still gave the most stupid excuse that he was there to make sure that the guy is dead.

when it suits them call us No.1.(usually bragging or trying to impress AMDK)

then tell us compare with Slum contrives (pinoy). When basic stuff cockuup.

This is their pattern.
