recently had the chance of speaking to an elderly...

from him, i found out that security guards do not earn a lot. something like a thousand plus a month, minimal basic pay, topped up with other allowances.

supposing there was a scheme for minimum wages, how much do you think he could have earned?

yes, i was talking to the elderly man, not a meimei. i also learned from him that it would be hard to have free health care for the Citizens.

he said it was good to note that Singapore has no natural resources, thus the costs of health care for the Citizens cannot be free, but when i asked if he thought the health care costs for the elderly and poor be cut to zero using the profits taken from medical tourists and i challenged him a lil': asking if he believed in welfare, he carried his point across in an almost nonchalant manner, that really shocked me initially. he said, the elderly and poor should be looked after by their family members, and should not be depending too much on the Government.

there is an element of truth in his answers that shocked me. it reflected a true sense of understanding, albeit in a very morbid manner, that our society is crumbling.

the elderly and poor are no longer taken care of by their immediate/extended family members, disregarded and abandoned as thou' they are garbage. the nucleated families created from the HDBs doesn't help much in fostering family cohesiveness, social values gone down the gutters, pragmatism taking roots, climbing up the social ladder and earning MILLIONS deemed a more important task than taking care of their aged parents, the young couldn't do better in this kind of environment because there isn't any better models for them to emulate and the problems cascades and accumulates...

history seems to have this tendency to repeat itself, or is it that me look more approachable and elderly folks find it easier to relate to me? after having spoken to Uncle Teo, me had another 2 occasions where 2 other elderly folks spoke to me over lunch.

the first was during the period where most of us couldn't log into the kopitiam, the second was just a couple of days back. interesting perspectives that me get from them, the vibes me got from the both of them are vastly different, if me may further elaborate, both events took place during lunch time. first was the uncle who complained about the poor work attitude from the kopitiam helper (a middle aged man in his 50s), indicating the elderly folks should choose something else to do. the second was an auntie whom lamented that folks didn't want to work these days (she was pointing out to some middle aged men playing chess at some void decks).

one didn't want slow workers, the other wanted elderly folks to work. seems like it is very, very, hard to please everyone in this world :(:(:(

whether elderly should work or not is subjective. There are certain jobs the elderly can do but seriously being a driver (taxi/dispatch/delivery) should be a no no... reflect slow, eyesight poor, judgement suspect. if money not a problem then being a volunteer should be encourage. i had no problem with elderly as a co-worker, some elderly can shame a younger man in physical endurance. elderly should only do jobs that are within their physcial strength and dont behave like a know all. nobody would like to listen to story how the work was done during the era when polis wear burmuda.

as for elderly kenna abandon, sometime must find out the reason why instead of blaming the children. some elderly can be bonehead and dont listen to reason. some could be children also have financial problem. if the son/daughter live in landed property, drive big car type, liddat confirm shd sue their backside off. but if live in 3rm flat, have 3 children and earning $1k+, this type where got money to give parent.

This amount,a thousand plus for an ELDERLY security guard is a decent salary.I bet this man is probably above his 60s,children grown up and do not posses much of an endurance to handle security issues should a breach happen. So,he is probably enjoying his retirement. He could have earned zero.

Children who take up the responsiblity to care for their folks is commendable. Those folks whose kids abandon them should reflect on why they did so in the first place.More often,a can of worms will open. However, there are sensible people who are able to forgive and accept their past and move on.Afterall,it is very hard to break a family bond.Unless, the person is mentally incapcitated or disabled,I think the duty lies in the other able fuctioning member to play his or her role as a care giver.

Social pressures are increasing becoming more intense, with a small country overcrowded with foreigners who one day may be forseen to cause more social issues than the benefits this gov thinks they are presently bringing to us.To put it simply, when that happens, its too late liao.

THE STATE should render appropriate assistance to whoever needs it regardless of which party being voted into power.IT is a basic right and the social contract of all citizens.

bro,
me actually like listening to those stories, apart from the usual exaggeration, some tales do reflect on certain fundamental issues that is prevalent in our society :(:(:(
