Singapore's Failed Education System

. Typical useless arts graduate (out of 10 at most only 1 with substance), full of talks and dreams.

LKY is almost an arts graduate,so was his wify.Yet they rule your lives. It takes nuclear scientists to make an atomic bomb but does that place the onus on them to press the button --as scientists?.....it takes a person with lot of empathy and EQ to press that button of destruction. It is never based on scientific qualification.

And talking about dreams; you mean scientists never dream?...all science discoveries arose out of dreams. When people started to dream that they could fly like a bird, the concept of flying machines arose. One lead to another and we are now dare to explore the space.

One should dream---otherwise you are no different from an animal. As a matter of fact ancient civilization clubbed all sciences into philosophy, from there sciences took it's own divisions.

Today we define dreams by a better word; visions--visionary and so on.And further refined to forecasts for future by 5 years from now,20 years onwards and so on.No board of public listed company nor a political party can get away without tabling such forecasts.

You have a lot to learn about real life my friend.

he is just full of generalisations

Squirming Words

To me a place to get perfect education is bloody step out in the society and work. All the rest is just bloody bullshit and empty talks.

Sorry, it didn't give you everything you need. Most of us traded away our scientific calculators or a simple with large buttons type. Why ? Marketing, Medicine, Law, etc do not need it.

Even some of you guys' English are so bad that even a Polynesian or a African can speak better than some of us. Our English isn't English at all. There's no proper structure (not grammar) to support a proper sentence when most of us speak the language.

This word "Area" is not pronounced as Aerial.

This word "Their" is not pronounced as Dee-ar.

They just make me squirm.

Re: Squirming Words

All an "education system" does is to provide the bricks and the know-how to stack and cement them together.

It's up to each individual to decide what sort of house they build with the bricks provided.

With the recent release of the 'O' level results,,its seems that Foreigners in our system seem to do pretty well,,,guess we are not as good as rote learning as we thought...

the Malaysian scholars got extra edge :):):)
imagine them doing English, Mandarin, E-Maths, A-Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, SS+Elect Humanity, one core humanity subject, plus Bahasa Melayu. how can they not be top student with 10 A1s? they spend their academic time on the 9 subjects and their Bahasa is kuat kuat, just pay money & sit for paper only :D:D:D

What happen usually to all these bright young men and women we have that had completed their education with excellent results? Where are they now?

retention value isn't rosy lah :(:(:(

Those people who are taking the 'O' level today are what is left after creaming off the elite group of students who enter the integrated programme. So the top performers of this group are in fact just the top performers of the rest. We heard that foreign students perform exceptionally well but this situation applies more to neighborhood schools. In the elite schools, the exceptional students are the locals. PRCs usually do fairly well in maths and if they also perform uniformly well in other subjects, they are most likely bookworms who do not participate actively in CCA or distinguish themselves in team assignments. PRC students are a couple of years older than their classmates. That said, I have also myself argued that Malaysian students do have some strong language skills particularly in Mandarin and Malay as well as their mother tongue dialects for the Chinese students because of their educational system. I am not so sure about the rest of the curriculum but I would imagine it to be a struggle and a major adaptation to change the language of instruction from primary school to secondary school both for the students and for the teachers.

For example you cannot test intellectual, moral, social and environmental values and such in science subjects

bro,

think you had just nailed the society's incessant need to quantify :D:D:D

how does one measures compassion? the moment one tries to quantify an act of compassion, it negates the idea of compassion altogether :o:o:o

I am no great tutor but taught him to believe in himself.
... ...
Exactly as how they run our economy--only the GDP counts, nothing else.

bro,

you're GTNG, Great Teacher Nice-Gook. it is tough to manage 40 odd individual at one time, given proper guidance, there isn't any one child whom can't do well unless that child had intellectual handicap.

me thought the idea of moulding a conformist was part of the idea of a 19th century styled education, massaging the GDP and keeping the Loh Mua out of the streets were secondary :D:D:D

You have brought out an interesting point. Some past great artists, philosopher ... are also scientists and "engineers". Today's education system segregate science from art, pushing those talented to specialise only in one field. Maybe if he/she is allowed to continue in all areas of interest there will be more discoveries and inventions.

....As a matter of fact ancient civilization clubbed all sciences into philosophy, from there sciences took it's own divisions....

bro,

almost lost you around your fourth sentence :o:o:o

anyway, it's good to note that there are only a handful of scholars planted in the secondary schools, mainly in the top schools: say... 200+ of them a year? there may just be a couple or more in neighborhood schools but it is rather rare.

true that the scholars are slightly less active in CCAs, only because some may already be involved in some sort of extra curriculum activities which may not be recognised by the ministry. to say that they aren't team players would be slightly too overbearing. let's not make biased remarks.

me thought some of the scholars may even opt for higher mother tongue to bag 11 or 12 A1s :eek::eek:

bro,

good point to chew on. maybe this generation would be better off if there were less distraction from TV, mobiles, movies & shopping and then they had more time to think :eek::eek:

Can't agree more. Mencius' mother moved 3 times to avoid bad influence. If she is alive today wonder what she will do. Education system today need to compete against so many external influence. The Chinese saying : "Learning to be bad takes 3 days but to be good will need 3 years." So the problem is not with education system alone.
