Maybe for start PAP MPs and PA Staff can show their confidence in these doctors by being treated by them. Remember PAP MP Vikram Nair drank a cup of water to proof to the press and the residents of a block that they need not worry about drinking from the water tank that had a dead body in it.

Singaporean assigned a foreign doctor at Polyclinic demands a local one

A HWZ Forumer who goes by the name of YongLimm said that he was surprised to be assigned to consult with a Burmese doctor at Tampines Polyclinic. He had brought his mother there for a check-up.

He said that he immediately left the consultation room, went to the counter and requested for a change of doctor. He said that he wanted a local doctor to attend to his mother because he did not want “to take (the) chance of risking my mum’s life and well-being to some foreign “uncertified doctor” from Burma.”

He said that the counter staff was quite understanding but told him that there was a longer waiting time to consult with the local doctors as many other patients had made the same request. He said the waiting time to consult with the foreign doctors practicing at the Polyclinic was a comparatively shorter one. The Forumer decided to wait, and his mother, who was the patient, agreed with his decision to do so.

The Forumer said that the waiting area outside the consultation room of the local doctor was packed and that they had to wait an-hour-and-a-half to consult with the doctor, but that the wait was well worth the wait. The local doctor spoke to his mother in Hokkien, which the Forumer said was very useful in arriving at a diagnosis.

Other Forumers who replied to YongLimm said that they have seen doctors who are from Thailand and the People’s Republic of China at the local polyclinics. Most agreed with the Forumer that he made the right decision.

Some Forumers also reminded YongLim about how an 88-year-old woman died about two months after she began taking overly high daily doses of a medication meant to stabilise her heartbeat prescribed by a Pinay doctor.

On March 26, 2005, the 88-year-old, Madam Koh Ah Tow, had gone for a regular check at Clementi Polyclinic. Dr Diana Ramos Santos, then a medical officer there, had increased Madam Koh’s daily dose of digoxin – which makes the heart beat slower but with greater force – by four times.

The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) struck the foreign doctor off its list for acting unprofessionally by prescribing the inappropriate dose, and by not taking ‘reasonable steps’ – such as amending the prescription or issuing a new one – to correct the error after she realised it.

A writer for this publication, Forever Vagabond, had written a few days ago about how the SMC gives = “temporary” license to foreign doctors with unaccredited degree to work here. Suggesting that there’s a loophole for doctors from unaccredited medical schools to practise in Singapore, the writer said:

“According to SMC’s own website (http://www.healthprofessionals.gov....eddoctor/international_medical_graduates.html), for doctors with foreign medical degree, only those who graduated from any of the below approved list of medical schools are recognised by SMC:

http://www.healthprofessionals.gov.... Registrable Basic Medical Qualifications.pdf

University of Yangon is not in the list. SMC specifically stated in red on its website:

“The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) would like to highlight that International Medical Graduates who do not hold qualifications which are recognised by the SMC, will not be eligible to apply for medical registration to practise in Singapore. This applies to all applicants.”

Then on the last line comes the caveat. SMC also said:

“Doctors who do not meet the criteria for conditional registration may apply for temporary registration, subject to existing criteria for temporary registration.”

Indeed, a search in SMC’s registry shows that a number of doctors from Myanmar armed only with a medical degree from University of Yangon were given “temporary registration” by SMC. For example, these 2 doctors from Myanmar were given “temporary registration” to work as medical practitioners in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in Jurong:
4It seems like in order to satisfy the demand for doctors in coping with the explosive growth of Singapore population in recent years, SMC is resorting to issuing “temporary registration” for doctors with unaccredited 3rd world medical degrees so as to circumvent the strict criteria for “conditional registration” and “full Registration” (conditionally registered doctors are supervised – they can apply for full registration after they have fulfilled a specified period of service).

Regardless of the “temporary registration” status, these foreign doctors are now practising medicine here in our public hospitals with unaccredited medical degrees.”

The HWZ Forumer [sic] is extremely xenophobic. He should've faith in his Prime Ministar and the cabinet the latter leads.

According to CNA (no, not Channel News Asia but Chief Natural Aristocrat), Sinkieland practises meritocracy regardless of race, language, region AND nationality. Sinkieland belongs to everyone, including foreign talents such as that Burmese medical doctor.

If I were a Sinkie, I'd definitely petition Chief Natural Aristocrat to admit and allow medical doctors from Burma, Cambodia, Laos, the Phlippines and India to practise in Sinkieland. Why? They're cheaper and less likely to complain.

You have every right to seek a local doctor or doctor whose first qualification is from the recognised list. You can google the qualification by accessing the SMC website for details of registration. It only means a long waiting time or another appointment when local or a better qualified doctors are available. When the authorities fail to even vet properly, this would be something they have to accommodate.

That time this Myanmar doctor not qualified case haven't come to light mah and so no basis to insist on choosing local doctor if not they say you xenophobic. As you know subsidised patients cannot choose doctor in govt hospitals or polyclinic. In fact I remember clearly the staff saying only can choose between female and male doctors . But that's no use as I ended up with one foreign female doctor in one case due to many foreign third world doctors around.

I had my suspicions of these foreign doctors qualifications then due to my experience and observations that I shared in this forum before and even went to check the medical council list that time and saw significant number of foreign doctors on temporary registration but it did not strike me that temporary registration means unqualified lol. Btw I also created one thread on there are many third world foreign doctors in Spore but no one here highlighted then that PAP are allowing unqualified doctors to practise in Spore. I guess no one will ever think that unqualified doctors are allowed to work in govt hospitals and polyclinics until this case brings this to light.

Btw this is my 12th post or so. I would like to ask the moderators why I am still under moderation? Is this the very platform that allow people to complain discrimination of local Sporeans and yet practise discrimination of members?

Sam, there is hope. People acually read this forum, that is what we have been advising sinkies do. That is to reject these fake degree FT doctors. Seems like other people are also willing to wait longer to see a local doctor. If all sinkies can do this, then in the end, the polyclinics and hospitals will not hire these foreign people anymore because there is not enough work for them. They can treat their own fellow countrymen. If they die, that is their problem, as long as its not sinkies. this should extend to foreign nurses and other members of the healthcare profession.

Actually GPs carry an immense responsibility as they are in the front line. They have to be good across the board and if they get it wrong and the patient dies and lack of early detection and treatment has led to a severe outcome, their neck is on the line. They have to be good and fast as they need to clear a lot of patients where the majority have minor ailments and a few imaginary ailments but still have to spot the serious cases. And this on a daily basis. They also cannot afford to keep referring patients unnecessarily to specialist or the hospitals or even carry out tests just to be absolutely sure without some basis. Thus the recruitment of the best minds, years of training and demanding exams that they have to clear.

Its not a pleasant life when you get one or two idiots who are malingerers, hypochondriacs or just rude and demanding bastards. I am surprised that no doctor had lost his temper and whacked an idiot patients. Like taxi drivers they have to accept everyone.

When they make a mistake like all humans do, the burden they carry is not easily covered by small compensation like a damage to a car.

The typical Singaporean mentality is that being GP is easy. Which is also why they dowan to pay to see a GP. It is not just Sinkies in Singapore. The same goes for Sinkies and Msians in Calgary.

I am planning to switch to a different practice after another year. 3rd world country patients deserve 3rd world country doctors.

Have a surgeon friend who told me that he took up surgery because he realised that he could not handle being a GP for this very reason. It becomes worse when people reading up their ailments on the internet and started having protracted discussion with their doctors on course of treatment.

Having dealt with Chinese patients both in Singapore and in Canada I think the PAP is very smart to keep the co-pay system. And in private health care patient has to pay for everything.

The Chinese are the worst. No integrity, dishonest and are adept at milking systems. If everything is free they want everything. X-ray, Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, blood tests, refer to specialists.

In Singapore you can have all that.....and trust me patients WANT all that too....but they cannot afford. So they think hard before they pay $250 for that ultrasound or $1000 for the MRI. In Canada, they want. You don't give they say why cannot?

PAP is smart They know the people well. On the other hand, it also means that those who DO need those tests cannot do the tests when they see a private GP. Makes the private GP look like money eating scum. Again PAP is smart. Make themselves look good, make the GP look evil.

I give this advice to ALL young people. Stay away from healthcare. It sucks.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...epresent-take-home-pay-society-says-1.3664517

Eight of the 10 physicians who billed the most to Alberta Health last year were radiologists, but the group representing those practitioners insists the multi-million-dollar billings don't come close to representing their take-home pay.

The radiologists on the top 10 list of Alberta Health documents billed between $4.6 million and $3.6 million last year.

But Dr. Robert Davies, the Calgary-based president of the Alberta Society of Radiologists, noted doctors billing those amounts have to pay for equipment and staff out of that amount.

"The gross billing totals that you see there are for a whole physician practice and are not a doctor's salary, not by a long shot," he said. "In radiology, we really do have huge staff and equipment costs that actually take 70 to 80 per cent of billings on average, and this is quite different than most other doctors groups."

The highest-paid doctor on the top 10 list was an ophthalmologist who billed $4.9 million. Alberta Health did not provide the names and locations of the physicians.

Specialists are stove-piped bumps who read health problem through a pipe. I seen a ENT specialist for giddy problem, he made do many tests like hearing test, scoping the nose and he concluded I have no problem. Inserting a scope tube into my nose and the process lasted less than 1min, I have to pay a few hundred dollars for it. Later, I made a post in this forum, someone suggested me to buy magnesium powder from iherb. Taking it for a few months already, my giddiness is much better. I pay $0 for consulting a a semster who is not even medical trained.

sama sama. went to ent specialist because of severe allergy problems last few springtimes, and all she did was recommend and prescribe anti-allergy and anti-histamine drugs like zyrtec. could get alternatives like allegra and generic versions off the shelves at a pharmacy. they didn't help. web browsing suggested propolis and a longer term immune buildup with local raw unfiltered honey, and from then on i don't need any anti-allergy drugs whatsoever. my immune system from consuming local raw honey and beehive extract is now so strong that i can hike in the open fields at the peak of pollen season without a single sneeze. it's night and day. my sceptism of recommendations and suggestions from the web has changed drastically after that. sinkies who bought expensive manuka honey from nz thinking it will help alleviate their allergies in sg are wasting their money for their honey. the honey has to be raw and localized by local bees via local plants and flowers to be effective. and with that remedy, the ent doc will not tell you.
