Stop turning soft running tracks into concrete ones

I run regularly along the Punggol Promenade Riverside Walk, Lorong Halus Wetland area and the recently opened Coney Island area.

The jogging track along the riverside was paved with wood, while the track along Lorong Holus Wetland was made of red sand. They were a heaven for runners.

To my shock, all those runner-friendly tracks have been changed to hard concrete tracks.

It is quite appalling that even wooden benches have been replaced by concrete ones.

What has come upon the National Parks Board (NParks)? Why does every pathway need to be turned into concrete ones?

Understandably, concrete tracks need less maintenance compared with others. But does that mean every track should be hard and runner-unfriendly?

On one hand, schemes like ActiveSG are encouraging people to be more active and lead a healthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, they also have to face such disappointments. Ask anybody who loves running and they will say how harmful it is to run on concrete tracks compared with softer tracks made of wood, red sand tracks or grass turf.

Did NParks look for other alternatives at all?

The wooden tracks along the riverside were intact for at least five years.

Of course there was some natural wear and tear. But, instead of looking for other ways to strengthen them and extend their life, NParks seems to have taken the expedient route of removing them and replacing them with concrete.

There are a number of options to chemically treat the wood and make them more resistant to wear and tear. The red sand tracks need regular rolling, perhaps every quarter, depending on the usage.

Are these options too difficult or expensive to implement?

I am afraid it will be just a matter of time before the tracks on Coney Island will also be turned into concrete ones.

It would be great if NParks could maintain the few available soft tracks as they are.

Indians were in singapura first before chinese. Their requirements should be catered to first. If you go to jiu hu, you will notice chinese homes have no gardens as they cement the entire compound. Typical lazy buggers.

Want soft track just go to

1. Any sand beaches surrounding this tiny island
2. Grass are everywhere too, just run on the grass along the running paths at any parks in sg
3. Macritchie reservoir where MR25 regularly trains.

What all these Typical Self Entitled Indians want is Indians are supposed to be the centre of the universe and the world has to hand everything to them on a silver platter. He wants a long nice cushioned soft track right below his house at Punggol for him to run. Who is going to pay for the maintenance? Typical Stingy Indian Scrooges ??

Soft running tracks replaced for safety

We thank Mr Ramamurthy Mahesh Kumar for his letter (Stop turning soft running tracks into concrete ones; Sept 12).

The park connectors along Punggol Promenade, Lorong Halus Wetland and Coney Island are popular recreational spots for nearby residents and visitors.

Due to the popular use of our Park Connector Network, the National Parks Board (NParks) needs to carry out routine repairs to address the wear and tear to park amenities such as cycling tracks and footpaths to ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy our parks safely.

The original footpath along the Punggol Promenade (Riverside Walk) was made of glass fibre-reinforced concrete with woodgrain finish.
The footpath had to be replaced as broken and dislodged portions posed safety concerns.

Likewise, for the mentioned laterite or clayey earth path that was once located along the Punggol Promenade (Nature Walk), the path was subsequently replaced with an asphalt path. The formation of potholes along the uneven laterite path over time was not only a tripping hazard, but the potholes also became waterlogged and muddy after rain.

NParks aims to provide facilities that can be safely enjoyed by all, including runners, cyclists and families.

We would like to assure Mr Ramamurthy that Coney Island will be kept rustic.

The new park connector along the south of Coney Island, which will be completed at the end of the year, will have unpaved earth tracks.

Once again, we thank and appreciate Mr Ramamurthy for his feedback and hope that he and his family will continue to enjoy the parks.

Group Director, Parks
National Parks Board

This is why sinkies dont create great companies like amazon or toyota or ikea or underarmour, they dont understand businesses from the perspective of those who use their products and services, they see things from a business perspective,in dollars and cents,a chinky perspective likewise like many companies like pokerstars and ea games used to be fantastic companies until they were bought over and management changed and became money grubbers.
