SINGAPORE: The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Under-15 Boys' football team beat Montenegro 3-2 in their final Group D match to top their group.

The result means the Cubs will play Haiti in Sunday's semi-final, and they will be hot favourites to advance to the final and the battle for gold.

Montenegro will play Group C leaders Bolivia in the other semi-final.

It was a sell-out crowd at the Jalan Besar stadium as Singapore took on Montenegro on Thursday.

Giving the Cubs his support was none other than Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

And Mr Lee's presence must have inspired the boys, as they were off to another dream start, just like in their earlier match against Zimbabwe.

They scored in the third minute - with Suhaimi Muhaimin giving the fans much to cheer.

Montenegro equalised five minutes later.

In the 21st minute, Singapore gave away a penalty - which the visitors duly converted to take the lead.

Captain Jeffrey Lightfoot pulled Singapore back into the game in the 34th minute.

The first half ended ended 2-all.

In the second half, Singapore took the lead again through a brilliant effort Brandon Koh.

Tickets for the semi-final match between Singapore and Haiti are already sold out.

In badminton, Thailand made it a golden double at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Pisit Poodchalat and Sapsiree Tay-ratta-nachai clinched the gold medal in both the Boys and Girls' singles events.

Pisit beat India's Prannoy Haseena 21-15, 21-16 to take the gold, with South Korea's Kang Ji Wook settling for the bronze.

As for the girls, China's Deng Xuan slumped to a straight games defeat against Sapsiree, while Vietnam's Vu Thi Trang took the bronze.

In gymnastics, Russia's Viktoria Komova took the gold in the Girls' artistic individual all-around final, with a score of 61.250.

China's Tan Sixin scored 58.500 and secured the silver, while Carlotta Ferlito of Italy received the bronze.

Elsewhere at the International Convention Centre at Suntec City, China swept both the gold medals on offer in taekwondo.

Zheng Shuyin beat Briseida Acosta of Mexico 2-1 in the Girls' Over-63kg final.

Cuba and France both received bronze.

In the Boys' Over-73kg final, Germany's Ibrahim Ahmadsei forced China's Liu Chang into a tie-breaker round with 12 seconds to spare but eventually slumped to a 5-4 defeat.

Liu bagged the gold and Ahmadsei the silver. Canada and Jordan shared the bronze.

In future.. these Cubs will have potential to win SEA Games gold medals, qualify for Asian Cup or even qualify for World Cup :D

youth development system has been implemented & long running in many other nations. the nations that have seen results of the youth development system, ie: spain, holland, germany, england, japan, china, korea (norht & south)... and a long list of many other nations.

our neighbors have also implemented their youth systems for nearly 10yrs, ie: m'sia, thailand, vietnam, indonesia etc. took SSC & FAS so many yrs to finally realise the need for a youth development system.

see where singapore ranks??

I hope Singapore Cubs played Boliva in the YOG soccer finals for the gold & the Cubs win it. So this YOG will be a memorable one.

32 countries qualify for World Cup. 120th is very very far away.

5 countries from Asia qualify. 19th in Asia is also very far away.

I'm not trying to put Singapore down. I'm trying to wake Singapore up.

If Singapore really wants it, more needs to done.

NOTHING can be done. We are just not built to compete in football. We just don't have the physical attributes.

Once in a long while we get a fandi or sundram, but a team consists of 11 players.

Why can't we accept that fact that we cannot be good in everything?

What physique? Shorties like Kevin Keegan and Diego Maradona were top players of their days. So were skinnies like Paolo Rossi and Ian Rush.

Why is football more popular than basketball or rugby is exactly because of laxitude in physique requirement. In basketball, if you're short, forget it. In rugby, if you're skinny, forget it.

If you remember the recent WC 2010, the Brazilians were beaten by the shortest member of the Netherlands team who scored via a header.

You put keegan, maradona beside any of our players and you'll see the difference. It's not only about height and weight.

Same for ian rush rush and rossi. Johann cruyff is also very skinny. So is platini. But they are among the best ever. Don't anyhow namedrop without knowing what you're talking about.

I don't think you know much about sports to use them as examples.
