Singapore Fertility rate was 4.7 in 1966. Today 1.2 - whose fault?

Back then, the country boasted a fertility rate of 4.7 and so many women gave birth in the national maternity hospital in 1966 that it entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
The so-called birthquake raised concern that the fledgling economy would be overburdened, and Lee’s father, Lee Kuan Yew, promoted family planning, legalized abortion and encouraged sterilization. A “Stop at Two” campaign in the 1970s and the natural decline in childbirth as the economy developed brought the fertility rate down to 1.82 by the end of the decade.
Last August, Lee Kuan Yew lamented that the number of births in the city has halved since he came to power in 1959, even with twice as many people.

Old Autocrat LKY forced peasant women to abort their children and punish those who refused abortions or sterilization. LKY was trying to do what Hilter failed, 'Eugenics'. He wanted Ang Moh educated peasants to marry and have more children, businessmen and political leaders to follow the Japs and have mistresses and bastard children!

LKY boasted he could breed peasants as demostrated by the Turf Club breeding race horses. His ideas were given a good beating when Retribution strike and proved the Familee is not immune from genetic problems with his Albino grand child. Old Autocrat was shocked and Gecko fumed when they realised they have a genetic timebomb in their family tree while they shamelessly force poor peasant women to go for abortions to avoid breeding 'lesser mortals'.

But to create...how to do that when the people under them are frightened, cowed...etc. They tried throwing money at the problem but still it is not working. LKY's legacy is there for all to see. I'm sure that once he's gone there will will be many questions asked on how Sporeans were duped by LKY & how he manged to take Sporeans for a ride for so long. There will probably be books like THE Bernard Madoff of the east

I can't speak for others but I know many who emigrated & once they were out of Spore their family numbers increased. From observing friends & relatives living in Australia, Canada, US,.... the family size ranges from 2 to 7 children. While in Spore it's typical to observe single child families.

Having lived outside of Spore I know how much easier it is to have kids elsewhere. For example in Canada, a colleague who was a young single mother could manage because her child was being taken care at a day care while she worked. The day care was affordable. Canada also has universal health coverage. The poor don't have to worry about the health care because it is affordable & even free, based on ones income.

Also want to add that they don't charge GST on groceries, baby products, etc

Govt never stigmatise anyone. They simply encourage ppl to have kids. And if you don't want to ha e three or more kids, don't complain about foreign migrants

I am not sure if there will be any money left when the PAP gets tossed out of office. We know there have been tens of billions lost in bad investment. How much more have been lost, no one has a clue.
