Difficult to pivot to other sources, or had monopoly of the chicken market afford one to sit back & wait for govt ( taxpayers) subsidies?
The importer claimed that at $4/kg of chicken he would make a loss? How true is such? NO entrepreneur would go into biz without a profit in mind. At $4/kg, after deductibles such as rents, feeds, salaries, etc, his profit would be at $2/kg, as such is how entrepreneur would want to venture. Even if he sold chicken at $4/kg, he would still had made a profit. And if the deductibles increased & he sold chickens at $4.50/kg, he WOULD passed on that 50cts increase to consumers to keep his PROFIT intact. Does he thinks consumers are fools?
In such difficult Worldwide times, it is not time for any entrepreneur to sit back, because if he thinks he can afford to do so, OTHER entrepreneurs-local & foreign, WILL take such opportunities to GAIN market share in a free market, & then what for him? - blame everyone else for his prorcastination? Time, tide & opportunities wait for NO man.
To be an entrepreneur, more so one whom is experienced, in the face of difficulties, it is time for action-critical thinking & be resourceful. The temp ban by Msia on chickens was made known yesterday, & anyone in the trade would had LONG notice the environments & signs - post covid lockdowns, labor shortages, RUS war, etc & BE alert, so as NOT to be caught unaware & unprepared, if one wants to survive in the free market.
Even if so blind, there were still EIGHT days till the ban comes into effect. EIGHT whole days ( 24th May to 31st June) to react immediately. Any intelligent entrepreneur would IMMEDIATELY make calls to look for other sources - nearby or worldwide. It takes only a few minutes out of 1440mins in a day, in our connected World. Online research takes only less than 2 hrs to identify best sources, in terms of supply & logistics. Even if logistics are issues, mere calls to freight forwarding companies would provide solutions to available slots for shipping. Another few minutes or an hr is all it takes to call Singapore Food Agency to make enquiries on export/import issues on foreign food imports with answers. Once those issues are settled, a call to book a flight to the supplier country takes only a few minutes, with even anti-covid measures thrown in.
Next day, a flight to the supplier country to do due diligence - inspect the company, its operations & mgmt takes only a few hrs, to make a decision to use it, with negotiations on price. As it will be frozen chicken, the supplier would have stocks readily available for supply once the price is agreed upon & accepted. A few calls to the best freight forwarder, & within mere hrs, the chicken stock would be ready to be shipped. Example of shipping distance - 40hrs from Vietnam to Spore, 37days from Brazil to Spore, by sea. If by air, there will be higher costs, but from the same location, mere hrs - 2hrs for Vietnam, & 20hrs from Brazil.
All of such done within a mere 2-3days, if by air. More if by sea, but it depends on how severe the shortage will be, how much Scale of Economy the entrepreneur adopts to lower costs & how much consumers willing to pay to meet demand for the time being till the situation stabilizes for everyone.
There are NO impossible obstacles to overcome, but only LIMITS on one's will to overcome them.
