Malaysian supermarket chain Sheng Siong has rejected an appeal from Singapore stallholders not to increase the rentals by an astonishing 30 percent at the 5 wet markets it bought last year from HDB in a controversial sale.
The Straits Times reported Sheng Siong as saying that “the rental hike was ‘a decision made by our board of directors, after considering all factors, such as long-term and short-term costs and sustainability of the business model’.”
It claimed that the outcome is “inevitable” and sought the “understanding” of stallholders.
The increase means that they will have to pay about $2,000 to $4,000 in rent. The duration of their contracts was also reduced from two to one year.
As expected, it will be ordinary Singaporeans who will have to bear the brunt of the price increase and not big corporations like Sheng Siong.
Marine Marade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng told the Straits Times that he had written a letter to Sheng Siong to “reconsider” the rental hike and the shortened duration of the contracts.
It is unlikely that Mr Seah will get a favouravle response from Sheng Siong. Another MP Dr Teo Ho Pin who had earlier promised to help the affected stallholders at Fajar wet market “resolve” the matter has yet to comment on the issue.
The Singapore Democratic Party has taken Dr Teo to task for not doing enough to fight for the interests of the stallholders.
There are unverified rumors circulating in some internet forums that the son of one of Sheng Siong’s founder had just tied the knot with a daughter of a senior government leader.

SINGAPORE: Some stallholders at the wet markets operated by Sheng Siong have decided to call it quits, now that they have to pay 30 per cent more in rent.

About 10 per cent, or 14 stalls, told MediaCorp they have decided not to carry on at the wet markets, which are in Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Batok and Serangoon.

Sheng Siong bought the five wet markets from a private developer late last year and raised the rent by 30 per cent more, compared with the previous range of between S$2,000 and S$3,000.

Stallholders who are staying on said they will try to cope.

"It's hard to find a job outside," said William Ang a stall owner at Fajar Market. "With the rental increase, we just have to earn a bit less. No choice."

Said Rasidah Rashid, a Yew Tee Market stallholder: "We will continue for another three months. If the business is good, we will continue. If the business is not good, then we find another alternative."

Sheng Siong said it will try to find replacements soon, as leaving those stalls vacant for too long is not beneficial to the company or the wet markets.

Instead of aiming at PAP, we are all pointing the finger at the wrong entity.

Did SS has invisible backing that they can do whatever they like even to extend of destroying stallholders livihood and plunge many into jobless state ?

Good news. Just like the last GE when LKY lost many votes by his arrogant and condescending behaviour on National TV when he had a dialogue with young reporters. Just keep making blunders like this, it's good for democracy. The stall holders will now vote for Opposition.

They should have a law to block these kind of anti-competitive actions.

The Singapore Democratic Party has taken Dr Teo to task for not doing enough to fight for the interests of the stallholders.

Contested by Ling How Doong from SDP, Teo Ho Pin was the highest scorer in the last GE with 77%. Even WP candidate voted for him. If what he has done so far isn't enough and he do somemore, the next contestant would lose his deposit.

Soon, PRCs will take over as stallholders, as seen from the new kopitiam located opposite Compass Point. Beautiful part is, more than 15 stalls had closed since its opening few months ago. Well done, Kopitiam, keep it up. Lets see how their business will run with empty stalls. Likewise with Sheng Siong. If no takers, they will be operating at losses.

United we stand! Tai kay huan ahhhhhhhhhhh...............

How much did KOPITIAm bid for that plot of land?, at record price right. There was a 'wayang' over somr protest, some MP action..and eventually the bid still went to KOPITIAM.

The People's Affordable Party, will tell you that, KOPITIAM is a business, and it was market forces that determine the bid price, & the prices at the location will be kept AFFORDABLE!!!

But who are the forces in the market? anyway..every thing is AFFORDABLE!....:D
