Hui Yi and John kept their prewedding shoot on Coney Island fun and casual with a picnic.
Chng Hui Yi, 26, Nurse, and John Tay, 27, Adidas E-Commerce SEA, knew they wanted a relaxed and easygoing engagement session that would capture them just as they truly were. Their picnic prewedding shoot on Coney Island did just that, and made the whole day a fun adventure besides.

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?
John: We met at a mutual friend’s 21st birthday party. I noticed her immediately when I entered the room. She was with a couple of friends, playing games, and I knew then that I would eventually ask her out on a date. I was unusually nice to her throughout the party, always striking a conversation here and there, never going overboard, but doing enough to set the foundations for my master plan.
Hui Yi: My impression of John that night was that he seemed like a funny and outgoing person who was also attentive. I recall him asking if I needed a cushion to rest on since we were playing games on the floor. As I was the “photographer” that night, John used the excuse of requesting for party photos to add me on Facebook. And that’s how we started!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER?
Hui Yi: I love his warm and groovy smile, his big giving, heart and drive in life.
John: I love how she is strong-headed, determined, and intelligent.
SO HOW DID THE MASTER PLAN LEAD TO THE PROPOSAL?
Hui Yi: John surprised me with the proposal during our trip to Danang, Vietnam, in 2014. It was least expected since we were pretty young and there weren’t any telltale signs. He proposed to me at the gorgeous Hotel Intercontinental, with a video he made and a webpage complete with photos of friends and family and a QR code (of course!).

WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION, AND HOW DID IT GO?
John: We decided on AndroidsinBoots after watching a wedding video on Facebook. We love their editing style for both videos and photography. It didn’t take us long to show up at their office and that was that. We told Wilson the picnic concept that we had in mind and he picked out a lovely spot in Singapore to do the shoot.
Hui Yi: We wanted something a little less formal and staged because both of us aren’t very fond of cameras. We wanted to capture us as we were on any other day. We had fun discovering the lush Coney Island and the shoot went really well despite the heat and the monkeys! Wilson and his assistant were incredible and made us feel really at ease throughout the session.

OK ok. I should visit Coney Island, it's been decades! Used to boat there when it was almost untouched and not linked to the main land.
