I was with my boss having lunch at Redhill Food Centre the other day. We saw a lot of old folks(looks like in their 60s -70s) sitting around doing nothing, talking cock, playing chess at the Pavilion right next to Shop N Safe. His immediate reaction was why is the government allowing this. Why doesn't the government allow/encourage these pple to continue working. If they can continue working, we won't need so many foreigners in SG. Just look at Japan. They don't need as many foreigners because a lot of the services are handled by old folks
On the other side of the equation U got pple like the one in the article complaining about old folks working.
I think it is wrong to expect elderly in their 60s to 70s to work in menial jobs that are physically demanding. It is different if the elderly is working as consultant sharing experience. Last week at SGH I saw this elderly man with his body abit slanted still working as cleaner and mopping the floor. Today at AMK hub, I saw another elderly woman look like aged 80 or more also working as cleaner.
Also it is not becos elderly not working that the foreigners are needed, rather many foreigners especially the eatery service staff are needed due to the consumption demand generated by the foreigners here. Now need to build more flats, buy more buses, trains etc which will require to hire even more foreign drivers..it is a vicious cycle..
