I know of a guy who enjoys spending time in air-con comfort in public libraries where he reads and shits. He also trespasses into condos near his HDB block where he swims and showers. He also likes to meet with his retired ex-colleagues to enjoy free meals from them. As he is a retiree too, he wants to ensure he stretches his savings to last for his remaining years on earth.

$87000 HDB is only possible during the 1990s. He should be receiving his CPF payout soon, but I doubt a lot since he stopped working at 35yo. Nursing home is not cheap, maid will steal his money. Lease buy back will rob him of ownership of the flat. Anyway, he plan to live in his home for the rest of his life and do what he did to survive. Hopefully, and slowly he can accumultate at least half a million to be able employ part-time home caretaker. Most importantly, like he said, mental health and happiness is more important than stressing out in the workplace and then spend everything you earn with no guarantee of job security. It is food for thought for his kind of lifestyle. Singapore is not cheap. The guy looks cheap and poor, but his savings are probably more than many average sinkies.

54yo?? I thought in his 60s already. During year 2007, 35yo is considered old by most companies and getting a decent paying job is not easy. Adding to his injury, those were also the years our country foreign population exploded suddently, many Singaporeans lost their jobs and WP winning its first GRC in 2011 came as no surprise. I believed he gives up early, at 35, and stop believing in Singapore dreams the msm kept harping about. Once you stop working for a prolonged period of time, your mind, body became well adapted to your lifestyle and any changes, including job offer, become quite impossible for you to accept.
