Rising anti-foreigner sentiment in Singapore was a major theme in Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's annual National Day Rally speech.

He gently chastised the people for anonymously using the internet to express anti-foreigner sentiments, saying that this can only hurt the city state's global reputation.

But unlike the paternalistic leadership of the past, Mr Lee seems to be reaching out to his people.
