My life's experience

I suppose mine is a rags to rough-and-tumble story. At the age of 12, I learned to earn my own keep. During the school holidays, I trudged from my home back then in Bukit Merah to Paya Lebar to earn $5 a day in a garment factory. The meagre wage, however, afforded me to buy school books and pay for my school fees.

I continued to work part-time from secondary 2 onwards at McDonalds and elsewhere to put myself through school and help my family financially.

However, juggling between school and paid work wore me out. I decided not to further my studies after my ‘O’ levels. I went on to accumulate more than 10 years of experience in sales and marketing in various industries but mainly in automobile.

I am currently a Sales Director in the company my husband and I set up in 2004, after our first child was born. In the past 11 years, my husband and I have braved through all manner of the problems of running a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). From just the two of us with three workers, our company now has a staff strength of about 30. Today our company enjoys an annual turnover of $2 million.

As Sales Director, I oversee sales operations, and conduct training from time to time to ensure our sales people are well-trained in developing relationships with clients both in Singapore and the region. In addition, together with the sales team, I develop strategies, tactics, sales plans and profit targets.

My message to the voters

I have an important message for Singaporeans. I feel strongly that attitude in life surpasses that of academic qualifications. Don't worry about the hard knocks in life but don't stop learning from them. The twists that life throws at you can be turned into valuable lessons, they are experiences that books can't teach you. They certainly bring me to where I am today.

However, in my generation, we are still able to make it without the paper chase. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the younger generations as emphasis is there is an over-emphasis on paper qualifications. In addition, we are now have to compete with non-Singaporeans for a place in school and at work.

We need to need to amend our immigration policy and that's why I'm standing in this elections. The SDP wants to ensure that our population policy makes sense that we don't overcrowd Singapore with a 6.9 million population that the PAP wants to push for.

SDP and me
Since 2007, I have been a member of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). My main area of work has been in fund raising to support the party’s many activities.

In addition, I have organized events such as the Hawaiian Night (2008), SDP 30th Anniversary Dinner (2010), Kampong Night (2011), Chee Soon Juan Freedom Award Dinner (2011), SDP Kampong Kookoff (2012), Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) Event in Singapore (2013), SDP Back to the ‘80s annual dinner (2013), launch of the book, Teacher, Thinker, Rebel Why (2015), and the most recent SDP 35th Anniversary Dinner (2015).

All these events have helped not only to raise funds for the party, but more importantly, to reach out to Singaporeans, to inform them about our party's values and policies.
