SDP - It's Political Future - discuss

If simple folk like me can see CSJ is destroying his party why can't he see it? If he really has his party's and Singapore's interest at heart, he should step down.

Him working a clandestine operation to destroy SDP seems plausible though.

Just when CST was building up the party, with Ling and Cheo as MPs, it had to happen!

SDP should do a survey to see if people would vote for them if CSJ stood down.

Is this allowed?

I have been away and not sure if the ground has shifted or that SDP has changed.

It's quite hard to tell, but it's also quite hard to imagine Chee not coming up with some bizarre antics during the 9 days. Nett off, chances for SDP are daunting.

Thanks for the update. Hope AYG stay far away from TJS. Latter will be a liability.

Even if he stays away, TJS will have other people - you need at least 10 to form one. I said before that there are other free agents right now, such as Eric and Poh formerly from WP.

Heard VW was asked to leave because the party leadership felt his gay activism doesn't really put the party in a favorable position.

I suspect it is the Malay members. They had a Malay chairman who will be under pressure from his community.

Open gay activists like VW and Alex Au will find it difficult to establish themselves at a high level like the CEC in any party. Malay-Muslim members are one reason. They are in every party. Same with WP, where there is a Malay vice chairman and MP, same with NSP which has a Malay Bureau.

There is a reason why the 9 WP MPs after 3 years remain united while SDP fell apart within 2 years after 1991. These 2 aren't impressive as leaders, politicians or wise enough and became part of the problem. Had they played a role as a stronger glue between CST and CSJ, the problem could have been evaded. Instead their taking sides alleviated the problem.

Jufrie? He is 'flexible' and modern. Maybe VW was a threat?

Ling was busy screwing around.

No way for peace between CST and CSJ even if there were peacemakers. It had to break. SDP was a threat then.

My sense is that it's VW's decision. Pursuing something that he feels closer to and same reason why Alex Au is not involved. Mainstream politics requires one to be all things to all people. The PAP had the same issue with 3 former Ministers of State - Dr Augustine Tan, Dr Tay Eng Soon and Ho Peng Kee. In their case, religion. All 3 struggled and Augustine Tan had to leave.

VW is too much of an asset to push out.

Ling and Cheo instigated Chiam's ouster. CSJ was merely an unwitting front for their devious antics. (Remember CSJ was a political newbie then – he had just joined the SDP in '92 – he had zilch clout within the party, PhD aside.)

It was an amicable separation. He couldn't align his heartfelt cause with SDP's (recent) neutral stance on S377A. A great asset to the party, his absence will leave a huge void.

That's about right. But it was a very amicable parting of ways. He still participates in party activities, but is no longer a member.

Sadly, Chee Soon Juan has been thoroughly character assassinated during the Goh Chok Tong days. The majority of daft Sinkies have been turned away from him.

Absolutely. People harp on how CSJ kicked CST out, but it was the media's orchestrated demonization of him that drove the nail into the coffin.

"Where's the money??!"

TJS and AYG are very thick. It was TJS who roped in AYG in GE2011. They were both on the editorial board of the Rafflesian Times in school.

Michelle would probably join TJS's party if she comes back.
