SINGAPORE: The opposition Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) on Wednesday introduced its first batch of candidates for the upcoming General Election.

They are from SDA's component party, the Singapore Malay National Organisation or PKMS.

SDA says it has identified 20 potential candidates so far who are from a diverse background and aged between 27 and 65.

Four of them were introduced at a news conference at the PKMS headquarters.

They included a husband-and-wife team who are first-time candidates - 42-year-old Nazem Suki and his 38-year-old wife, Noraine Anabi.

Mr Nazem, an entrepreneur, is the SDA's assistant secretary-general. Ms Noraine is a business consultant.

Ms Noraine is SDA's first woman candidate to be introduced for the coming General Election.

The third SDA candidate introduced on Wednesday was Mr Ismail Yaacob, the 46-year-old vice-president of PKMS, who last contested in the 1988 election.

The fourth candidate was SDA's secretary-general Desmond Lim.

Hope these chaps don't lose their deposits. With fatty Desmond around, how to be credible? The only consolation is that their participation means more S'poreans can vote.
