<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to Tuesday's letter by Mr K.T.S. Sivam, 'Friend dying, yet no one stopped to help'. Mr Sivam mentioned that his friend who died had called police for help at about 7.19pm, and later called his son at about 7.55pm. The son arrived minutes later but the ambulance had not.
We take all emergency calls received seriously and respond to requests for assistance in the shortest possible time. We have examined our records and have established that the first call to police was received at 7.29pm. Police routed the call to SCDF. SCDF immediately dispatched the nearest available ambulance, which arrived at the location mentioned by the caller within 12 minutes of the dispatch.
When the ambulance crew was at the location and trying to locate the patient, our crew noticed a member of the public in a taxi waving at them. The ambulance immediately approached the taxi and found the patient inside in a state of drowsiness. After assessing the patient, our ambulance immediately conveyed the patient to the nearest hospital.
While en route to hospital, our crew performed procedures to stabilise the patient's condition and alerted the hospital to the case as it was life-threatening.
We are sorry to learn of the subsequent death of the patient, Mr Rattan Singh Sandhu, and offer our condolences to his family.
We would also like to encourage members of the public to step forward to render assistance in whatever way possible when they see people in need of help in emergency situations.
Those who wish to learn first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving skills can avail themselves to free courses offered by SCDF. This will allow them to respond in a trained manner during emergencies. The public can get more information on our courses by contacting us on 6848-1524 or visiting our website at www.scdf.gov.sg LTC N. Subhas
