SINGAPORE: A 49-year-old Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular serviceman from Air Defence and Operations Command collapsed at 9.11am on Saturday during his Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) at Tengah Air Base (TAB).

Major (MAJ) Toh Tze Wah Edi, an Air Warfare Officer, was at the halfway mark of the 2.4km run when he collapsed.

An SAF medic on site evacuated MAJ Toh via a safety vehicle to the TAB Medical Centre where an SAF doctor attended to him.

MAJ Toh was sent via an ambulance to the National University Hospital (NUH) at 9.19am.

The SAF doctor and medic continued their attempts to resuscitate MAJ Toh in the ambulance.

MAJ Toh arrived at NUH at 9.44am and was pronounced dead at 10.24am at NUH.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late MAJ Toh.

MINDEF is assisting the family in their time of grief and is investigating the incident.

Commander Air Surveillance and Control Group Colonel Gan Siow Huang said: "MAJ Edi Toh has contributed 29 years of service to the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).

"He was highly regarded as a professional officer in the RSAF.

"A dedicated instructor for a significant part of his career, many of his trainees remember him fondly and are grateful to Edi for making a difference to their careers as Air Defence Controllers.

"His demise is a tragic loss to the organisation, and our hearts go out to his family".

Now I understand why the RSAF ambulances was simply driving fast with flashing lights but without siren along Jalan Bahar.

Must be a farmer which explains the stagnant rank at that age.

HINERANGI VAIMOSO RACING AHEAD: Bruce Christopher, a member of the Manukau City Veterans Cycle Club, is the oldest sponsored cyclist in New Zealand.

He might be 91 but the oldest sponsored cyclist in New Zealand clearly recalls the day he rode his first bike.
Bruce Christopher was about eight and had seen a man park his bicycle outside the local general store near his home in Rotorua so he jumped on and gave it a spin.

"I was hooked from then on," he says. The Mt Roskill resident still rides a steady 40km every week in rural Papakura as the oldest member of the Manukau City Veterans Cycle Club. "I must admit I don't get as motivated as I used to," he says with a laugh. "I liked the days when I had people in my age range to race against. I do it for the camaraderie these days."

Mr Christopher was gifted a $4000 bike from Avanti and Cycle City in Manukau for his 90th birthday, making him the oldest sponsored cyclist in New Zealand. He bought his first bike when he was 14. It was a model made by the Canadian National Cycle Company and he earned it by sweeping offices in central Auckland after school. "Doctors told me I'd eventually get arthritis. That was 40 years ago and it hasn't happened yet," he says.
He has even been knocked off his bike by a car when he was younger. "There are a few plates and screws here and there and I'm on all sorts of funny heart pills but I'm still getting by."

Mr Christopher recommends cycling as "a body and soul-preserving sport" with plenty of fresh air and healthy competition from the younger ones within the club. "I love to see that girls have taken up the sport to such an extent these days," he says. That's especially pleasing because his wife, a keen athlete when she was alive, was often frowned upon for being a female cyclist. "A number of people back then would say girls shouldn't be riding bikes in that position," Mr Christopher says. "That attitude has really changed over the years and I'm pleased."

The veteran cyclists get together every Sunday around 8am, setting off from Ardmore Hall on the corner of Papakura-Clevedon and Burnside roads..
Full membership is available to anyone over the age of 30 but people are welcome to become an associate member. Riders are able to take on distances between 25km and 80km.

The group was formed in 1992 to meet the needs of veteran cyclists in south Auckland. While the turnout varies each week, it's not unusual for the club to host 120 riders on a Sunday from all across Auckland. Mr Christopher is more than happy to make the journey to rural Papakura every week with his trusty bike dismantled on the back seat of his car.

Club president Kelvin McAnulty says the club's youngest member is in his early 30s and many of the members are in their 40s. "They usually join when the kids are grown up and off doing their own thing so they're then able to get back out riding again," he says.

Go to cycleclub.co.nz for more details on how to join the Manukau City Veterans Cycle Club.

Runner dies on finish line of half-marathon
A runner collapsed and died as he crossed the finish line of a half-marathon race.

The 28-year-old, believed to be from Kingston-upon-Thames, fell to the ground at the end of the 13.1 mile run which was part of Nottingham's Experian Robin Hood Festival of Running.

The man, who has not been named, was treated at the scene by paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service before he was taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he died.

The Robin Hood Festival of Running was launched last year to take the place of the Robin Hood Marathon, which was first held in 1981 and is one of the largest full and half-marathon combined events in the country.

A total of 13,500 people took part in the event, which started and finished at the Victoria Embankment. The man's next of kin have been informed and an inquest will be opened into his death.

In recent years a number of amateur runners have died at running events throughout the country.

In 2005, four runners died in the Great North Run from Newcastle to South Shields. Despite bringing in more emergency service personnel the following year, another participant also collapsed and died.

Last year a 22-year-old man died in the London Marathon, the ninth death since the Marathon began in 1981.

Wussies are everywhere :) The 91 year old ah kong is "lucky". We also have another 88 year old ah kong who build Sg roads to fcuking narrow for sinkies to cycle on...

It's just not worth it to die for this country.....

There is no need for officer to show off to their subordinate how energetic they are. I saw my elderly officer run 2.4km like madness and than scold his subordinates for being young and slow when the result came out. Made them retake IPPT and even pushed the last runner. Hao Liang old Peng!!

Our very own, 78 years old young, probably still working as a gym supervisor at Singapore sports council....

Fail IPPT when 49 year old regular equals game over. Cannot pay finish your mortgage, kids still in school, wife see you no up and sleeping with expat in the condo next door.... I think die better

Re: SAF Regular Serviceman dies during IPPT

Male Singaporeans die doing stupid stuff like these. FTs and PRs are enjoying having fun all the way without these stupid regime.

What is worst is that these FTs and PRs starts to think that Singaporeans owe them a living because the PAP gov kept repeating that Singaporeans cannot survive without them.

If you don't know the difference between a Pom and a Kiwi, you're an even bigger twit than I first thought.

Re: SAF Regular Serviceman dies during IPPT

Everytime an SAF personnel die during IPPT/running/exercise (happening with increasing frequency)-it makes me wonder about the role of the SAF.

Isn't the role of the SAF to prevent foreign invasion?
Than how come we are being invaded by PRC's/Indian FT's and Pinoys who steal our jobs, our places in schools, occupy our hospital beds and our properties?
Why would anyone need to send their armed forces to attack Singapore when foreigners can just walk in and are welcomed with the red carpet.

The best part is, we have so many former Admirals and BG's who actually join the party and facilitate the invasion by foreigners.
I guess the SAF is still useful for NDP- where second class locals can perform for the 1st Class new citizens who never have to serve NS .

Even Pinoys or is it PRC's (identity protected) can slap our parents and the police took no action.
Try slapping one of these foreigners(eg your maid/staff) and I will bet the police will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Thank You to the 60%-you may be on the way to extinction.Sun Times front page just reported more Indian babies born .
