Tithes are monthly donations to the church, usually 10% of your monthly salary. They either get the money in a sealed envelope with your name on it, or auto-deduct from your bank account.
Offerings are anonymous. Offerings are when you seated during a service (or standing up to sing) and an offering bag (or plate) is passed around the congregation, and you take out money from your wallet and put directly inside the offering bag.
There are also numerous other funds for donating money e.g. mission funds, building funds.
What an investment eh? Give all your money for social acceptance among like-minded believers and the promise of a blissful afterlife.![]()
Does anyone ever caught taking out money from the bag instead of putting in ?
You are robbing god if you don't give.
The very fact that those envelopes have a blank space for you to fill your name (among other details) indicate that you are encouraged to not be anonymous.
Even the act of picking up 12 envelopes is despicable... CPF has already whittled down your monthly disposable income, and now you are expected to give more money each month.
You aren't robbing God but robbing the pockets of the middlemen selling a church business, but they sure frequently use that Malachi verse to shame you into giving your money to them.![]()
Church goers have many options:
1) Take the envelope, place some money, write your name on the envelope, return the envelope each month
2) Take the envelope, place some money but don't write your name on the envelope, return the envelope each month
3) Take the envelope, place nothing in the envelope and don't write your name on the envelope, return the envelope each month (this case does not happen)
4) Don't take the envelope, nothing to return each month
5) Use your own envelope to put the money (these people are normally irregular donors, they do not want to take the 12 envelopes because they do not donate monthly. But then there is nothing stopping them from taking 12 envelopes and not using all the 12 envelopes)
6) Do nothing. It is not a requirement to make a offering or tithe each month. All people are welcome to church. The church (in this case the Methodist church) does not force people to donate to the church. The tithe does not even have to be 10% of income. Any amount is okay, that is why the Methodist church allows anonymous tithes and does not have GIRO nonsense. But again it is alright if you choose not to give a single cent as the church does not force people to donate.

A school friend of mine told me he used to take the coins from the donation box in his school's chapel for his cigarette money. He was also a server boy for the church his family attends (told me that was where he picked up smoking). This catholic boy was a rascal and a thief during his youth, today he is a well-mannered, tax-paying family man whose only vice is drinking beer at the kopitiam, looks like his God forgave him for his sins and blessed him with a peaceful life.
Cheers!
